I received my financial aid package today and it's WAY more generous than I expected!

Carbon, I think you "outed" yourself long ago. I don't follow these threads nearly as closely as current applicants, but I was 95% sure you were a Yalie from other things you've said.

And I'll have to politely disagree with you on East Rock, just so some folks here can see an alternative viewpoint. It's a beautiful neighborhood (great for walking, running, biking), and you get much, much more space per dollar here than downtown. It's a very easy bike ride from the law school. Three different Yale Shuttle lines run through the neighborhood, all of which drop you off one block from the law school. No matter where you live in East Rock, you're not very far from a shuttle stop. Orange Street has several little specialty grocery stores and sidewalk cafés. State Street has plenty of restaurants and bars. The neighborhood is much quieter at night than many parts of downtown, and it's not infested with undergrads. It probably appeals more to folks who have been out of school for at least a couple of years, but there are tons of law students across the full age range living here, and everyone I know who lives in East Rock loves it.

That's true--East Rock is probably less appealing for K-JDs or those who want to stay close to the restaurant/bar scene downtown, but it is a beautiful place with its own merits. It just comes down to personal taste for noise level, nightlife, access to certain areas, and commute tolerance. I hate walking more than 10 minutes to go anywhere, so that was my bias against East Rock.

Has anyone found a good thread on HLS vs. Yale?

Currently trying to make the decision.

I'll be at both school's ASWs in April!

Anybody here back about the ASW? I put in a request to be housed with a student and received an email that the situation would be arranged, but I haven't heard anything else since then. Is anybody else in the same boat?

I requested to stay with a student when I filled out the form to RSVP to the ASW, but I have not heard anything since then. Not exactly the same situation as you, but a bit similar.

From Yale's website: "(Housing) Applications open on April 1st."

Later, while attempting to apply...

"Error executing database query."

April Fools.

I was actually able to submit an application last night after midnight, and it went through, so the application does seem to be open.

Glad to see another student interested in on-campus housing; I thought historically less than 1% of law students lived on campus. Which buildings were you going to select as preferences?

To be less flippant, the only good reasons I could see to take H over Y are : 1) Your very serious SO lives in Boston. 2) You're set on doing JD/MBA. 3) Your happiness has a borderline pathalogical connection to how much you like the city you live in (though for normal people, no first semester grades > Cambridge anyway). 4) You're doing JD/PhD and you got into a Harvard PhD program that also pays for JD (I met someone at ASW who was seriously undecided even in this situation, lol). There's no real difference geographically, Yale almost always gives bigger financial aid packages, and virtually all employment is slightly to very much easier to get from Yale. Harvard having more course offerings is not a good reason to pick it.

I mean in terms of access to jobs and general proximity to family, etc. It's perfectly reasonable to pick Stanford over Yale because you want to work in California and all your family is from SoCal. It's really not reasonable to pick Harvard over Yale because you want to work in Boston and your family is from Vermont. Cambridge is obviously nicer than New Haven, but I generally think that's a pretty bad thing to base a decision on.

Interesting. I've tried multiple times, and it always gives me an error right after the screen where you enter you name, birthdate and email. I'm probably interested in Whitehall and Esplanade. Yeah, I'm not sure how much of the 1% is due to housing availability and how much of it is due to a lack of desire to live in university-owned housing.

Is anybody else impressed by how many student organizations there are at YLS? I was reading through the list, and just couldn't believe how many were listed. It seemed close to the number that Harvard has, but at a school 1/3 the size.

Will do -- maybe they're waiting until RSVPs close (i.e. tomorrow)? I'm guessing you already bought train / plane tickets ... buying tickets and having no place to stay would be an absolute nightmare. Now, I'm slightly worried. :-(

I stayed with a student last year. It's never been a problem in the past
