This may be a dumb question, but Law School Transparency gives the class of 2012 a employment score of 69.5% which really doesn't sound all that terrible to me, unless I am interpreting the data wrong? But doesn't this reflect that 69.5% of the class of 2012 are employed in full time long-term legal jobs? Am I missing something, because this sounds to me like graduating from SC would give you almost a 70% chance of employment?

That's the raw numbers, yes. I'm not surprised. I hear stressed 2Ls, but a lot of 3Ls have got it figured out. People like to knock USC, but it is an economic powerhouse here in South Carolina. Most of our professors tell us that at least one or two people in each class is going to end up as a congressperson for the state. The alumni network is the strongest in the state, and there are a lot of opportunities.

Our career services is actually pretty good. We have one career services chick devoted entirely to clerkships, a monster pro bono program (I would match Pam Robinson against any pro bono director in the country and expect her to win) and several people who have been in career services for a very long time, and know many, many people.

One thing to note about those jobs: yes, most people get jobs, but it is through networking, not through grades. Do not think that you can just waltz through in top 20% and employers will fall at your feet in order to get you. You have to go out, get to know people, and work your butt off. Also, OCI is not a big thing in this state. Neither is biglaw. You should note that the biggest employer is small firms, followed by state government and clerkships. Also, we don't tend to place very many in federal clerkships.

The school gives you plenty of opportunities to network, though. It assigns an attorney mentor to you your first year (they're generally someone important. I've heard of everything from assistant deputy prosecutors to complex real estate deal lawyers to state court of appeals judges), and you have a course where important lawyers from all over the state come in and tell you about their jobs.

I got in off the waitlist yesterday evening and the email mentioned that scholarship funds were gone for this cycle. I'm in state so I wasn't expecting any to begin with, but for any other out of state people, they may not be able to do in state matching anymore.
