UC Hastings c/o 2016 Applicants (2012-2013)
Didn't see this one up on here yet, so I thought I'd start it up! Submitted 11/15, complete 11/20. AA URM, 164 LSAT, 3.21 GPA, strong softs IMHO. I'm already regretting submitting early, it's been three days since I went complete and I'm going insane!!!

Checking in! Complete as well. The "complete" email stated they wouldn't begin reviewing apps until December. I believe them as well, since they have no status checker. Seems like they are more old-fashioned

Re: UC Hastings c/o 2016 Applicants (2012-2013)
Went complete 11/13. Would love to go to this school and get to stay in SF. Walking through the Tenderloin every day, not so much. Three friends go/went here, incredibly different experiences. One hates it, says it's insanely competitive and back stabby, told me to go to a better school than Hastings, has gotten some great internships and connections, wouldn't be surprised if he's got a job lined up, in top 20% I think, 3L. One is a starry-eyed 1L, despite the workload, thinks Hastings is the best thing ever, was admitted to higher-ranked school with scholly but chose Hastings over it, works hard/plays hard, got involved in some legal aid for homeless right away, lives in student housing, made hella friends and loves it. One graduated in bottom 50%, is paralegal and TestMasters teacher, not sure about career, said she enjoyed LS and didn't stress herself out too much as she heard of a gunner law student dying a year after graduation and big law.

Went complete 11/15, ED.
Haven't heard anything. Consulted to with two of my friend's siblings who attend the school. Both students love it and have been successful with OCI, etc. However, I do assume these two are high in class rank

Re: UC Hastings c/o 2016 Applicants (2012-2013)
Friendly FYI for Early Commitment Option applicants -
I emailed Hastings the other day to clarify something in my file & written in the response was "We plan to update our ECO applicants by Dec 14th-17th". I thought that was a little funky since those dates go through a weekend, but that's what they wrote. So if you don't hear immediately on the 14th (hopefully we all will, anyway) don't commence a freakout until at least the 18th.

Hey everyone - I am current 1L at Hastings. Feel free to ask any questions and I'll try to get back to you as soon as I can.
FYI - last year Hastings sent acceptance letters in a "small envelope" (i.e. your average, letter sized envelope). I definitely thought it was a rejection letter at first, but then found a pleasant surprise Best of luck!

I got a call last year before the letter. Did Dean Canada not do that for everyone?jump_man wrote:Hey everyone - I am current 1L at Hastings. Feel free to ask any questions and I'll try to get back to you as soon as I can.

Re: UC Hastings c/o 2016 Applicants (2012-2013)
I believe the order it went for me last year was 1. E-mail acceptance, 2. Phonecall acceptance later that day, 3. a letter acceptance at some point. The small envelopes freaked a lot of people out. Last year, it seemed as if not everyone got phone calls either. Hastings is unpredictable!superpippo wrote:Can't tell if being sarcasticBigZuck wrote:I got a call last year before the letter. (Who knows, some motorcyclist in a yellow jumpsuit (our badass Chancellor) might ride up to your dorm someday to give you your acceptance in person.)

But I did the thin envelope first, and I've heard from others they had a similar freak-out experience.

Call was definitely first for me. Letter came after that. Can't remember if I ever got an email.superpippo wrote:Can't tell if being sarcasticBigZuck wrote:I got a call last year before the letter. Why did that sound sarcastic? I didn't mean to sound like I was some great candidate or something (obviously I wasn't because I only got need aid-no merit), I was just honestly surprised that they didn't inform everyone the same way.

Do you remember the timeline of when acceptances started rolling out for RD people last year? Should I expect to hear back before or after Christmas?jump_man wrote:Hey everyone - I am current 1L at Hastings. Feel free to ask any questions and I'll try to get back to you as soon as I can.

I applied mid-November and didn't hear back till February. From what I remember, Hastings sent out acceptances a little later than they had in the past, but I definitely wouldn't expect anything earlier than late January.wbrother wrote:Do you remember the timeline of when acceptances started rolling out for RD people last year? What did you think? I'm actually from NorCal. Gf is from SF.
For those who haven't visited or aren't familiar, it is in the Civic Center neighborhood but on the edge of a sketchy area (tenderloin). However, I think people tend to overhype the sketchiness. I wouldn't go walking around at 3am, but besides that, I'd say you are fairly safe. It is also conveniently located next to a bart station if you would prefer to not live in the immediate area.

Re: UC Hastings c/o 2016 Applicants (2012-2013)
I don't think it's that bad. I lived in a less than desirable LA Suburb. Now I live in Santa Cruz, which is nice but definitely has its bad areas. I visit Berkeley a lot and I think Telegraph is way worse than the tenderloin. I think the tenderloin has a bad rap because of SF's stereotype as a purely high class metropolitan paradise. It's a city like most big cities. All "Beverly Hills" are very close to the the South Centrals of the world. I won't have any problems living there if Hastings will have me! Definitely visit though if you are considering this school.eav1277 wrote:What did you think? I'm actually from NorCal. Gf is from SF.

I definitely agree with you that it's not as bad as they make it out to me. I'd consider attending also. But at the same time, it's not as nice/safe as the area around other schools. I don't think it'll be a deal breaker for most but at least be aware of the neighborhood before making any decision.

Seriously though, you will spend almost every waking hour of your top-law-schools.com (at any law school) in the library or in your apartment studying, reading, and outlining. Choosing a law school by neighborhood is one of the worst criteria for selection. Instead, you should compare libraries or other study spaces, because that is where you will be living.eav1277 wrote:I definitely agree with you that it's not as bad as they make it out to me. SF is one of the most livable and accessible cities on the planet. The TL (Tenderloin) has a bad reputation, but it's actually a really interesting neighborhood with tons of cool spots. And the locals are actually really nice once you get to know them! Some of the best bars and restaurants in the city are in the TL. But to be fair, Hastings isn't really in the TL - it's barely on the border. It's possible to never even set foot in the TL during your time here as a student (just don't walk north).
One of the great benefits of Hasting's location is that you are three blocks away from EVERY court (except of course SCOTUS) - SF Superior Court, CA Court of Appeal, CA Supreme Court, CA Fed. District Court, and the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals. There are also TONS of state regulatory offices here in the Civic Center. You are also one block away from a BART/Metro station, there is a farmers' market in UN Plaza three times a week, and "Off the Grid" every Tuesday/Thursday. I honestly don't know how I would have time to go shopping for food if I lived at some Suburban Law school with no access to farmers' markets or supermarkets - there just isn't enough time in the day.

There are people in this year's 1L class that got full rides - definitely worth giving it a shottwinkletoes16 wrote:I still can't decide if I should apply or not. Do they give out full rides?
