People who went to this past admitted students weekend -- where did you stay hotel-wise? I want to go to the March ASD and I'm trying to figure out where I should stay.

I stayed at the Ritz in Clayton, it was really nice and only a few minutes drive from campus. The Moonrise hotel is supposed to be nice too and it's right on Delmar.

Iowa schollys have stips right? I'd bet 100k+ and no stips from WUSTL.

Also come to WUSTL for snacks and Friday chess, apparently.

Hahaha I had to take a stab at the student panel chick who was all about the snacks.

Also, did you end up making it sunny? Didn't see anyone who I thought looked like what I remember you looking like, and I didn't want to ask some rando "are you sunny?"

All in all though I loved everything about it. I couldn't believe how insanely nice Mary Ann Clifford and Janet Laybold were, I probably talked to them one on one for an hour. And at the reception Dean Clifford whispered to me that I'd be getting a "really big" scholarship in a couple weeks, which was awesome. So was the free beer.

He was late. And yeah I legitimately love WUSTL - most of the people there are both positive and realistic which is a pretty rare combination as far as LS these days is concerned. I was surprised by how few attendees there were but I there was no shortage of interesting people.

My guess is the one in March will be more heavily attended because students will have a better idea of where they want to go.

Did anyone check out Central West End? If so what did you think?

The March one has a lot more people. Ours had 20-30 of us, and they said the March one usually has 70-80.

The CWE looks like a really nice neighborhood. I drove around Clayton, U City, the Loop, and CWE, and the CWE was the nicest by far. There are some semi-sketchy neighborhoods scattered throughout, though, particularly between the CWE and campus north of the park.

I feel like Clayton is the best as far as nice part of town with no scary shit between it and the school.

Very much so, the only problem is there are no real 3 am bars west of campus, so it is mostly olds that live there and is a pain for taxis if you are going anywhere east of cwe (downtown/soulard). If you aren't feeling cwe/the loop i would recommend brentwood or tower grove north neighborhoods.

Btw, Dean Clifford told me scholarships will more likely be coming out mid, rather than early, February.

I wonder if I should email some private pics over the admissions. It can't hurt right?

I know, and this was after she gave me the wink-nudge that I'd be getting a good one, AND after I had started slamming free beers at the reception, so I almost said "cocktease" before I stopped myself

Send em my way first so I can tell you whether they'd help or hurt.

If any of you are visiting WashU, be sure to ask places/hotels you stay at about WashU discounts and that you're visiting/a student and they have discounts. IIRC, the Ritz is almost 50% off.

Also, I think what is great about WUSTL is that the students all appreciate how hard they have to work to get jobs and study, but it's colloquial and friendly.

One thing I didn't really understand about the law building was how the library is laid out. Is it basically scattered all throughout the building, or is it kept to the same side of every floor of the building? I couldn't really get a feel for that during the tour.

Also, how common is it for professors to not allow laptops in class? The contracts class we sat in on didn't allow them, so I wondered if that was unusual or not.

I've heard the area surrounding the campus is sketchy... Any thoughts?

it's generally on one whole side of the building. But there are study carrels that are all around the floors. The library is from 1-5. Floor 2 also has classrooms and the lockers. Floor 3 has no library. Floor 4 is the reading room, and some other study rooms/carrels, and floor 5 is basically teacher offices and all library. In short, there's never a problem finding a seat.

Most of my professors have not permitted laptops, because they don't want us writing everything they say anyways. 95% of what they say isn't necessary to write down anyways.

depends. STL isn't like NY where everyone is around walking at 12am. There is a bunch of restaurants and shops north of campus, and north of that street you really don't wanna go near walking especially. But there's a huge park on the other side of campus, and west and east are just fine.

I've never felt unsafe. If you're worried about areas, don't look at USC, GULC, etc. Big cities have crime.
