Just got offered the super generous one time Dean's Merit Scholarship of $20,000

Now that I know I'm getting nickels thrown at me, I won't go near WCL with a ten foot pole.

EDIT; I know this sounds snotty, but honestly what is this school thinking with its tuition?

How were you informed?

I'd need some serious cash to consider attending as well

Via a 'courtesy' email from ≈15 minutes ago. Some direct quoting:

"...it is my pleasure to report that you have been selected to receive an American University Washington College of Law Dean's Merit Scholarship. The Dean's Merit Scholarship consists of a one-time award of $20,000.00 to off-set tuition during the first-year of law school at American University. This email is provided as a courtesy only. It is not an express or implied offer of admission or scholarship funds. Actual offers are only sent via U.S. mail."

+1
The acceptance was nice but the school is so expensive, the city is really expensive and the job prospects are too weak

And that's it for the 3 years?
No thanks (at least if it was me)

Not to mention competing with Georgetown, GWU, UVA, and anyone else who ever wants to work in DC.

My cousin goes to American. I would have honestly considered it. Instead the tone has been unfriendly, communication has been minimal, few advances or attempts to persuade me have been made, and I've never had personal contact with the school.

The way they offer up "courtesy" emails and include provisos about "implied funding" makes them seem cold and silly.

Just got the $20k for the first year offer as well. Frankly I was surprised to receive anything, given American's reputation as being stingy with merit aid. They've gotta be one of the only schools to do this first-year-only scholarship award, I haven't heard of anyone else doing this.

I just got a one time $10,000 award.

At first I was thinking this was just a tac on to scholarship offer that is still on its way.... I guess I was wrong.
Goodbye American

Do you know if they are contacting applicants regardless? Meaning to tell if they got something/got nothing?

I'm trying to understand the reasoning behind this one time move. I don't get it.

This is what I was thinking. Its not? I got a one time 7500 offer. Guess I can cross American off my list. Just doesn't seem worth it.

Does it matter if its in a lump sum versus being divided per year?

(I'm not being snarky/sarcastic. That is a genuine question.)
It does and it doesn't. It does when it's 10K or something like that. It doesn't if they give enough one time $ that will make sense.

Both these things. I got an offer of $10,000 and I like the school, but... :?

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
Just kidding ... it's still FREE!
