I am going to apply if I don't get into UVA ED...

I would love to see if I have a shot at the full ride plus stipend!

Agreed. Hopefully they are lenient with grants this year to help make up for less-than-desireable job placement

Thinking of applying. Just curious, how many people who apply and go aren't actually super conservative Catholics? They clearly try pretty hard to attract a certain type of student but I wonder how many "others" slip through the net because they like the location, or the school, or the programme.

I'm really interested in the study abroad opportunities.

I'm very liberal and I'm Christian but not Catholic (even though I know conservative Christians would probably refer to me as a "cafeteria" Christian). I'm applying for the program, the fact that it's a Christian school is actually a con for me.

Also, Pepperdine isn't a Catholic school. Church of Christ is WAY different.

The school is Christian. The "super conservative" christian thing is not really at all present. I think the rumors of it stem from the fact that the undergrad campus, from what I know, is like that. The law school is itself diverse, lots of atheists, catholics, a few muslims, etc. Put simply, you will not notice anything different than any other law school. Don't let the essay put you off. Everyone complains about it at Pepperdine and a lot of people will tell you that they were almost put off by it.

Otherwise, Pepperdine is a pretty fun place to spend three years. Nice campus. Fun town. Fun people. Good surfing. Good mountain biking. Good beach volleyball.

I have heard decisions will be mailed out after the school returns from holiday break. Good luck to everyone.

Please excuse my ignorance. I am definitely not bothered by the essay, was expecting something of the sort from more institutions but I didn't want to end up somewhere I'd be sticking out like a sore thumb because I have very liberal and un-Christian views and I occasionally like to share them.

Thanks

I am under the impression that they like a good mix of views. Could be wishful thinking though because I am in the same boat as you.

Your impression is right. I'm not religious so when I applied I was a little apprehensive. Here's the rundown from my perspective after 2.5 years there:

1) During orientation the school president will lead a prayer. That is the last time I have ever seen that done.
2) There is an essay about religion which I am sure you have written if you applied to Pepperdine. You will find a mix of views regarding the essay at the school, most students and faculty don't seem to know exactly why it's required, and most don't particularly care for it.
3) The only student I've ever seen praying on campus was Muslim. As far as I know, he did not burst into flames.
4) There is a Jewish club on campus.
5) There is a LGBT club on campus.
6) There is a "prayer" or "meditating" room upstairs in the library. Several third years don't even know about it. It's an extremely quiet place to take a nap between classes or do whatever it is that you do in there.

What I am getting at is the Law School (I can't speak for the University as a whole) is not how it is portrayed here on TLS. There are liberal students, there are conservative Students and so on an so forth. Regardless of your faith or political beliefs, you will not be alienated at Pepperdine, there just may be a little more of a conservative atmosphere at the school because a lot of students are from Texas.

If you want to get a feel for the school, come to the school and check it out. Don't limit yourself to the "tour" that they give you. Talk to students and get their feedback, I know most law students are happy to talk to prospective students.

Accepted today via status checker! Hoping that my acceptance packet will contain some scholarship info! Btw, does anyone know how much money that Pepperdine's President Scholarship for Church of Christ members is?
