Thank you for your interest in Emory Law. I wanted to write you from my personal email account to express my appreciation for your patience as we reviewed your file. I am well-aware that you have deadlines and decisions to make, and it is always our goal to find space in our class for applicants with such high credentials as you.

The Admission Committee invites you to join our waitlist, for we hope to offer you admission as soon as we are able to analyze our first deposits in mid-April. This year has been unique for Emory Law’s admission cycle. To achieve an optimal class, we plan to admit students over the next several weeks, and I hope you will stay with us so we are able to give you the option to join our community.

To accept our invitation to join the waitlist, please reply to me personally by Sunday, April 14. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me as well. I want to make sure you have all the information necessary to feel comfortable joining our community.

Again, we fully anticipate admitting numerous students from the waitlist, and we will have some scholarships available. To alleviate some of the uncertainty of the waitlist process, if you are offered a spot at Emory Law and matriculate with us, we will credit your student account for the amount of your non-refundable first deposit to one other school (up to $250).

This sounds more like a priority list to me. During the cycle last year, I had a similar email, asking me to reply "personally". They called me shortly after to offer admission. They basically want to know you're still interested in them, because they're interested in you but have a more limited amount of seats right now.

The priority e-mail had parts that were specific to details in my application. The following in an excerpt of what is likely the boilerplate part:

Thus, I would sincerely appreciate your joining our priority waitlist that we offer to a very small, select group of applicants. This will hopefully allow us a chance to admit you with the maximum scholarship possible shortly after our deposit deadline of April 19. To accept our invitation to join the priority waitlist, please reply to me as soon as possible and no later than Sunday, April 7. In addition, if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me personally as well. I want to make sure you have all the information necessary to feel comfortable joining our community.

Because of the likelihood of your admission, I also invite you to attend our Visiting Day on April 13. Emory Law is happy to provide you hotel accommodations on the night of April 12 to assist you in attending. To register, simply go to http://www.law.emory.edu/visitingday. (Attending is in not a prerequisite of admission. Just a chance to get to know the school better.)

Based on reading the two, I'd agree that mine does sound very marginally more "prioritized." At the same time, I thought at least one other person posted something that sounded even more personalized than the one I got; which was also received after midnight from Ethan last Thursday. So, perhaps there are three lists.

EDIT: From what we've all posted here, it seems like the super priority list is of people who are all but definitely getting in, the list I'm on appears to be an expedited wait list where chances are decent, and the regular wait list is on par with how most schools treat them. No idea whatsoever what the differences are between the latter two, though.

I don't think there are three lists. There were probably just people who got waitlisted while he was in the office and another email that went to those waitlisted when he had to shoot them off from his personal email address.

Thanks to nba and cbarlow for posting the wording of their letters. Seems to me, there is definitely 3 lists. Good news for some, and not so good for the rest. Curious to see if Dean Rosenzweig will post anything regarding this.

Mine is almost exactly like cbarlow's waitlist letter except I was encouraged to visit the campus (not for admitted students day) but maybe that's b/c I'm a URM.

Someone might just consider calling them to ask on which type of wait-list she actually resides...

Priority one:

As you may know, it is a unique year in law school admission, and thus, it is taking us additional time to admit our optimal class. There is no question that you will thrive in our community, and I would like to find a space for you in our Class of 2016.

Finally, to alleviate some of the uncertainty of the waitlist process, if you are offered a spot at Emory Law and matriculate with us, we will credit your student account for the amount of your non-refundable first deposit to one other school (up to $250).

If you remain interested in Emory Law, allow us the chance to admit you so that you have all your options available. I do hope you will stay with us, and please reply to me no later than Sunday, April 7. I look forward to hearing from you, hopefully seeing you at Visiting Day on April 13 as well.

Hello – this is Ethan Rosenzweig, Dean of Admission and Financial Aid. My staff has alerted me that questions have arisen about the waitlist. Hopefully, this update will provide some answers:

Waitlist Notifications: Last week, the university suffered an IT interruption that affected some of our web pages and forms. As such, we were unable to send all of our waitlist notifications through our web-based email system. Thus, some folks on the wait list may receive emails worded slightly differently. Additionally, due to the fluctuating decision process, some very competitive candidates were placed on the waitlist until we have a clearer picture of what funds will become available for scholarship awards. I know that financial aid offers are very important, and I want to ensure that competitive merit awards are given simultaneously with offers of admission.

Visits: Last year, when we notified wait list applicants of their acceptance, many students mentioned that it was difficult to make a decision having not visited the school. Thus, this year, we have invited small groups of waitlist applicants to various events so that we can examine whether we should host a more formal event in the future. However, attending these events is by no means a pre-requisite to admission. I understand that conflicting schedules and travel costs can preclude some students, and attendance has absolutely no bearing on your chances of admission.

I hope this explanation is helpful. I encourage you to examine our programs and community so that when I have the chance to offer you admission, you are as excited to join us as we are to offer you a seat.

Uhh, that's not exactly what his post says. You might want to read that a little closer.

I understand that there's two groups--my letter and the other that was posted are equivalent, and then there's the priority group.

In thinking about it, Dean Rosenzweig's post all but confirms that there is a priority waitlist. If there wasn't, he would just have to deny it and the matter would be closed. My other waitlist school made a point of saying that those of us on the Group W bench were not in any order. In addition, the "...small groups of waitlist applicants..." invited to attend events just might happen to correspond to those same students on the priority waitlist.

As to the total number of lists, who knows? It seems to be 2, but there might be 5 or 10. Or even 1.

on another note, does anyone know how taking the June LSAT affects waitlists? should i email the schools (including Emory) that i'm waitlisted at to let them know i'm taking it, or will they automatically find out?

They'll find out automatically but i'd tell them beforehand so they know to look for it. and I imagine that it helps your chances if you improve your score
