Accepted earlier this month, officially withdrawn today to attend elsewhere. Hopefully this opens the door for someone else -- best of luck to those still waiting!

Did the Gates scholarship application reminder go out to everyone today or does it mean something?

I got one, and by the language used, I assume it was sent to everyone else.
And since i'm posting, anybody know how long the "In Review" process lasts? I got that update on 12/17.

Got the Gates scholarship invite. Sounds really cool. I think they've convinced me to apply. If I got it, it would be VERY hard to turn down.

Got the email too. Does anyone know if this is concerned more with softs/experiences or if you pretty much need to be above median GPA and LSAT along with the relevant experience to have a realistic shot?WhatOurBodiesAreFor wrote:Got the Gates scholarship invite. From the email:
No mention of GPA/LSAT. I'm sure the scholarship board will cross-reference your Gates application and admission application, so if you apply, make sure those are consistent and complimentary to one another.The Gates PSL Scholars are selected from among the group of talented students such as yourself who are evaluated on the following criteria:
·Applicant’s personal commitment to public interest work as evidenced by previous work and/or volunteer experience;
·Strength of an applicant’s essay describing personal vision and factors that have influenced his/her choice of public service as a career path;
·The extent to which the applicant can make a positive contribution to the Program as evidenced by his/her portfolio of experiences and interests;
·Prospects for the quality of the applicant’s performance as a student and a lawyer;
·Apparent good character including integrity; and
·When applicants appear equally qualified selection shall be determined on the basis of financial need.

I believe that they primarily if not only care about soft factors. I am a grad student at UW and was accepted for a concurrent law degree with my PhD. I am friends with a few law students, including the Grad/Professional Student Body President (who gets a tuition waiver, def look into this if you go UW Law) and was told that the type of people that have gotten the Gates in recent years have started non-profits and done crazy volunteer and public interest work. I don't know if this is helpful, but I've heard that if you don't have much volunteer experience it is not worth applying to.

This. I'm currently a UW student and one of my undergrad professors (who also teaches at UW Law School) told me that in all her years of teaching, she's never seen a Gates scholar who hasn't been out of school for at least a couple of years and who doesn't have some amazing softs.Aloyicious wrote:I believe that they primarily if not only care about soft factors.
