Yeah, and it was an email about getting MORE emails. Well, thanks for the warning I guess.

Michigan Really appealed to me b/c of the high rank, urban setting, and relatively low 25th percentile lsat.

Third highest school I applied to of 18 schools and was my first reply in the cycle. Really surprised as I think I submitted on the 23rd and received my acceptance on the 3rd.

Everything looks really great, but like others, I'm worried about its reach outside of MN. I have no idea where I want to practice but would really like to spend some time in a big city. I guess the worst thing that could happen is I end up spending a few years post grad in Minneapolis, building up experience and then possibly moving to one of the coasts.

Checking in here in the same boat. Just got my acceptance! Applied 12/25 and accepted 1/11. I have never been to Minneapolis and am also concerned about the move-ability of a degree from there, but am excited at some of the salary figures posted earlier if I stayed in Minneapolis! I would'nt mind doing that for a couple years!

Also, I missed the call from UMN, was wondering why they didn't leave a message until I realized I never set up my voicemail on my new phone...whoops. That also explains why I haven't gotten messages from a number of other people in the last few months as well.....

So should I call them back? Do they give scholarship info out over the phone or should I just wait for the surprise in the mail?

Call them back if you want, but they don't tell you anything about scholarship info over the phone, it's mailed out.

ETA: My status changed to admitted later the same day after getting the call.

Just curious since I can't seem to find this anywhere: How does need-based aid work at UMN? Do they add need-based aid to merit scholarships? Or do they not generally give more aid to those who already have merit scholarships?

ya same question and here's my additional questions from last page

on a side note, just got my acceptance package today. 16k a year, but I'm hoping to negotiate it up a little especially because I have a huge demonstrated financial need. Anybody know if this is a factor at Minnesota? What about law school in general? I'm an independent student (both parents passed away, one my junior year of high school and one during undergrad). If you have "demonstrated financial need" do you only get loans from the Federal government? Do law schools revise their aid packages once they've seen your fafsa info?

I believe you fill out a Need Access form, though I am not certain.

169/2.95, Submitted 12/29/12, In Review 1/2/13, Accepted 1/11/13

I missed the phone call around 2:30 Friday and spent the next hour staring at my phone, email, and online status waiting for any update. Tried calling the number back but only got a voicemail. Got the email inviting me to the admitted students website at 3:30 Friday. Voicemail didn't come through on my phone until Sunday!! Waiting for admissions packet with scholarship info. Grew up in Milwaukee, went to UMN for undergrad (class of '08), live in Twin Cities and have no plans to move/practice elsewhere (fiance's family all lives here). Also applied to William Mitchell and St Thomas, still waiting to hear from them. Was worried about my low GPA but I think my soft factors helped a lot (4 years work experience in Class Action services with advancement, entering 4th year on executive board for local non-profit). Scholarships/cost of attendance will play a significant role in my decision (assuming I get in to the other 2 schools) as I am very averse to major debt.

Would love advice from anyone with knowledge of the MN legal market and how the local schools compare. I know MN is highly ranked but WM is known for a strong alumni network locally and I was impressed by St Thomas at their open house and everyone I've talked to who goes/has gone there has loved their experience. Also thinking about JD/MBA program but have not looked into it extensively.

The conventional wisdom would be, don't put much hope in "need-based" other than loans. Almost everyone who applies to law school has huge demonstrated financial need in the sense that they can't afford it -- very different from undergrad need based aid. Everyone borrows, and they almost all pay it back unless you are in some PI relief program.

Just went under review. How long does Minnesota's review process generally take? Did anyone actually have to wait the full 12 weeks?

In a bit of a panic because the stats on law school numbers are making it look like Minn is drawing a pretty hard line at 167 for acceptance. grrrr

True, but with a 3.8, I feel like you'll be fine. I also think they'll be pulling a lot from the waitlist this year.

went under review here today, 167/3.3 hoping for good news as this is far and away my first choice... other apps to submit for next week.

Yeah, I have no idea how I got in with a 166. I'm starting to think it was a mistake.

I just posted about this in the ask a student thread. This long thread where a current biglaw attorney in Minneapolis discusses the legal market there might also be helpful.

We shall see. I'm hoping that being an alum, with a LOR from one of their longest-serving profs should gimme the bump I need. I like to think that demonstrating a real investment in Minneapolis is a positive.

Update: Admissions packet arrived yesterday and UMN offered 20K/yr or about 50%.

169/2.95, MN resident and UMN undergrad. Definitely surprised considering my GPA but I did write an addendum regarding that. I had read on another UMN thread that they like splitters and I'd have to agree.

File went complete today, pretty quick considering what I've read from others.

Hoping to go under review in the next week or so! Very excited...

Sweet! Is UMN your first choice? Been very encouraged the past week, I've been reading that 167 is the magic number for most.

I love the Twin City area, spent a ton of time there traveling for hockey growing up.
