UMN's class of 2011 statistics were really horrible. It was an outlier and before that they were pretty good ite. I think one has to consider more of the trend than 1 year (which was the year they really didn't compare to their peers).

I understand concern though... 2011 statistics came out right when I was just about to put in my deposit iirc, and I had a last minute panic were I debated attending somewhere else.

The truth is I guess we'll all have to wait to see if 2011 was an outlier or will continue.

Also, agree with what Minnbills said... the "big law" firms here are really mid-law and have 110-120 k salaries

Checking in from Utah. Applying with a fee waiver soon as I get my second LOR submitted. A friend of my brother's went here a few years back and liked it, and was able to find work in Utah too, so I thought I'd give it a shot.

Hey guys! Quick question: do you think graduates can work pretty much anywhere in the US with a law degree from Minnesota? I am an international applicant considering applying but I know this area is now where I want to work or settle in. I wouldn't mind going to law school for 3 years there, but I don't plan on living there all my life... is there a risk that I won't be able of getting out of the local market when I'll be looking for work?

There's always a risk of that. Like I said above, I know someone who went to Minnesota who now practices in Utah, but that doesn't mean you can count on it. Rule of thumb is that you should go to the best law school you can in the area you want to practice, with the possible exception of those who are able to get into the T6 schools (and even then, if you want to practice in California you may want to think about Berkeley over Yale, for instance). Outside of that, you shouldn't go to school somewhere you wouldn't want to practice law.

In general I suspect UMN is good for either going back to home or staying here. I wouldn’t go here with thoughts of working in NYC, Chicago, California, DC, etc… It happens, but… I wouldn’t count on it. Also, I have NO clue how the impact of being an international student changes this (or if it does at all).

A caution against anyone listening to my own advice… I’m not trying to speak for Nova or Minnbills, but I think in general we aren’t really the best source for job searches and such as it relates to UMN. In the beginning of 1L year you don’t get that much exposure to how it will go for you, for example the Career Center isn’t even allowed to personally talk to us about jobs until November 1 (we just had our “Welcome to the career center” lecture). I think we might be a good source for the general law school environment as we probably know a decent amount on that aspect after a couple months, but for jobs Idk how useful we are at this point tbh

110k-120k in Minn gets you pretty far in the city (at leas from the research I have done). I know it might be more of a pain repaying loans, but housing will likely be a lot cheaper.

Same. I didn't submit until November 2nd, so this is a nice surprise. It looks like they render a lot of decisions in December. Here's to hoping we know in two weeks!

I hope so. I was on lawschoolnumbers and those with my numbers seem to get good offers.

Anybody know about when to expect a decision? I couldn't get a good read from LSN... I went complete last week, as well.
