There is a scholarship conference this week for Miami Scholars and others who I believe received titled scholarships (like full rides), which offers travel compensation, I'm pretty sure ASW and this other weekend do not. I remember in past threads people saying that Miami doesn't comp travel because too many people who weren't going to enroll wold take the free trip so that they could spend the weekend in Miami.DML13 wrote:I don't know. You're still within the window of time where initial scholarship offers are sent out. If nothing comes through by the end of next week, then there may not be any word for awhile, if it all. Numbers?kjb wrote:sent 2/7

Does Miami ever increase the scholarship amount you are offered? For example, if others decline scholarships or admission or something like that...Anyone have experience with this?

Miami has already done their "Random 2k Increase" and will not be increasing scholarships in such a widespread manner again. You are however more than welcome to try to negotiate for more money. It is my understanding that in the coming weeks (based on previous trends) Miami will soon begin telling students that their scholarship funds are tapped out. As such, the sooner you begin this process, the better.schmoxy wrote:Does Miami ever increase the scholarship amount you are offered? As I understand all the money that was allocated for rising 1Ls that was not taken is transferred to an account for scholarship increases for 2L/3Ls.

Also, I started a thread for anyone who has committed/will be committing/or is strongly considering attending Miami next August. Hell, even if you still aren't close to making a decision feel free to drop by and post something because right now I'm the only one who has posted anything and it feels like prom night all over again

Ah U of Miami is now ranked 76th (new rankings just released) and still no scholarship! I got much better offers from higher ranked schools....hmmmm What do you guys think about the rankings this year?

Their nose diving employment stats are what scares me... not the ranking. Anyone else have thoughts on the new rankings?

I have many thoughts on this new development. Not very positive ones, though...Law911 wrote:Their nose diving employment stats are what scares me... not the ranking. Anyone else have thoughts on the new rankings?

the new ranking was a little disconcerting... especially with respect to the scholarship money i've been offered....might end up at FSU or UF after all!! Its hard to justify such a high cost with a really mediocre scholarship when higher ranked schools are offering me more! come on miami...

Yeah I was offered 0$ from Miami, but I've been offered around half tuition $ from schools ranked ten to fifteen spots higher than UM. I don't get it.schmoxy wrote:Law911 wrote:Their nose diving employment stats are what scares me... not the ranking. Anyone else have thoughts on the new rankings?

USNWR has flawed methodology, but people still care about it for some reason, so I'm just gonna have to as wellNikiShiz wrote:Ah U of Miami is now ranked 76th (new rankings just released)....hmmmm What do you guys think about the rankings this year?
As an earlier poster said, the employment # is what concerns me. I won't have any debt, but I'm wondering if it would be worth the opportunity cost.
I still have about a dozen apps out elsewhere, so I don't have to think about it quite yet. Also going to a job fair on Sat to see if I can drum up a plan b to law school there.

I'm sure everyone has seen the new rankings. I'm not trying to be woefully optimistic, but the numbers are based on 2009 employments statistics (the year after the crash, florida hit especially hard). Secondly, Miami had a large number of students pursue LLM's that year (about 7%), all of those students were idiotically counted as "unemployed". You can look at UF or FSU's small rise and try to discount what I'm saying, and if you were deciding what law school to attend in 2010 you'd have good reason to do so. However, LST shows that UF & UM are still very compatible schools.

I called and asked when we'd receive financial aids info and they said it would be end of this month.

I talked to them today too and they said that an option (but not a guarantee) to get an idea of your financial aid package is to call the financial aid office and ask them for the historical data for scholarships for your individual range of scores. Also, another bit of advice I received today was to contact Wendi Owens in the financial aid office and ask (if you submitted your FAFSA early enough) what your projected need based financial aid will be for your 2L and 3L years since Miami doesn't award need-based aid for 1Ls.Chief Littlebighead wrote:I called and asked when we'd receive financial aids info and they said it would be end of this month.
