I applied last week and haven't gotten an e-mail saying they received my application yet and it looks like other people got some kind of confirmation a few days later. Any chance they're behind because of the holidays or should I call and see if something's wrong? LSAC says they sent all of my reports out.

Edit: Nevermind, just got an e-mail

Took about 3 or 4 weeks to receive mine. My wife absolutely loves the bag (it's the envelope the package comes in).

Hello, 0Ls -

I'm currently a 1L at Tulane and I just wanted to give you some forewarning about the school's grading system. By now, I'm sure you've spent exhaustive hours researching schools, grading curves, scholarship stips, etc. You, like I did as a 0L, probably have the conception that at a T50 law school, a "C" is awful, while an F is damn near impossible to receive unless you don't even show up for the final or just write "CASSEROLE!" 600 times.

This is not true at Tulane. There are a select few professors who have no qualms about giving Ds or failing grades to students who show up, make a good faith effort, and generally "know what they're talking about" but just don't "meet their standards." I know this because I was given an F on a 1L fall final that, by most professors' standards, probably would have been a C or C- at the lowest. (To put this into context, my other grades were B/B/C. Not stellar, but definitely not in the failing range). I'm here on a rather generous scholarship, and because of the F, I'm at a high risk of losing it.

I don't want to specifically discourage anyone from attending Tulane. Other than the F, I love it here, and New Orleans is incredible. I just don't want anyone else to have to go through my situation, because it's been a bit of a nightmare. Be wary if you're thinking about going here strictly based on the school's scholarship offer, assuming that, because you got great grades in undergrad, you'll get great grades at Tulane Law.

Feel free to PM me if you have any questions about the school in general.

Just got my acceptance package in the mail. 30k a year on the condition I maintain at least a 3.0. According to the letter I was sent a 3.0 is the top 75th% so it doesn't appear overly difficult to maintain this scholarship.

Just got my admissions packet as well. The whole tote bag-mailer thing was pretty cool. They offered me 25k a year with the same stip. Would still cost an awful to attend though :|

Just got accepted too... waiting for the admission package. I wish they would mention the scholarship amount in the email too. Processed the application really fast though, barely 2 weeks. I'm really impressed with that.

Any one have any information about the crime and safety situation in New Orleans?

As a local I can tell you neighborhoods go from good to bad very quickly so renting an apartment without seeing it first is not recommended. On the other hand there are definite respected boundaries, so even if you're only a couple of blocks away from the hood, you generally don't have to worry about spill-over.

The city does have a high violent crime rate, but that really boils down to two things: 1) our total population is relatively small, so our per capita crime rates end up looking terrible 2) most of the murder/violent crime is isolated to people in the game. If you're buying/selling drugs... best of luck to you. If not, you have less to worry about.

There's also some predatory stuff in the high-tourist areas (and a little bit around Tulane, but to a much lesser extent). I'm talking muggings/purse snatchings/ car break-ins etc. That sort of thing sucks, but getting your car windows smashed isn't the end of the world and can happen in any city.

If you're not going out of your way to get involved in something you shouldn't get involved with, and you're not dumb enough to walk around in the ghetto, drunk on hand-grenades, you'll be fine. If you're aware of your surroundings, and if you make reasonable attempts to protect your stuff, you'll be fine.

Yah the deposit slots mean nothing. I have that in many many apps.
Honestly I thought they'd move much faster...

The FBI released a list of the top 25 most dangerous cities for 2012, and New Orleans wasn't on the list. So that's good news.

Haha that's incredible.
Honestly living in NOLA is about 45% of my initial interest in Tulane.

i loved growing up in NOLA (lived right outside NOLA and went to highschool in uptown). I'm so sad I can't make it back this weekend...superbowl...mardi gras...I can't imagine how crazy it's going to be. I miss king cake so much.

New Orleans is a great place to be. I actually have a view of the superdome from where I work. While it makes me sad that I'm not going to the Super Bowl, I'll be able to get decent saints season tickets next year for the same price as a crappy seat at the Super Bowl so I'll be okay.

Also, as for the 25 most dangerous cities list, Baton Rouge is number 25.
