Does anyone know if NU negotiates scholarships AFTER you've already tried once? Please don't quote because going to delete later (hey johann), just looking for input.

no clue. did you get a new offer that you could work with. If so, it might work. If not, I doubt it, but as always, I doubt theyd retract anything either, so it couldn't hurt.

Does NU have a summer start program for incoming 1Ls in the regular JD program? If so, do I have to pay out of pocket?

Summer start like taking actual classes? No. Summer start like a preview thing? There was one last year, and I believe it was free. franklyscarlett did it; she'd know more.

From Seat Deposit Confirmation E-Mail (from Gapasin): "I am also pleased to inform you of a summer academic preparation opportunity for incoming Northwestern Law students sponsored by Latham & Watkins. Latham & Watkins has generously agreed to sponsor Northwestern Law students to attend a law school prep course this summer. To learn more about this scholarship opportunity and see if you qualify, visit the following URL: http://www.lawpreview.com/scholarships.

From the e-mail it sounds like it's a scholarship available to all students but from the scholarship application it seems like it's a diversity scholarship. Who knows, really.

lol wustl has the same thing except it's sponsored by Dentons. It's just one of those short summer prep courses and they waive your registration fee.

Law Preview is a private company that charges $1000+ for a law school prep course (see elsewhere on TLS for reviews.)
It's not necessarily a diversity scholarship; I got it last year and I'm white (and there were plenty of other non-minorities in my session). I'd do it for free but wouldn't pay for it. You get a bunch of free 1L supplements out of the deal at the very least.

Last year NU had their own (free) version of it, the week before orientation. That's the one franklyscarlett did. I have no idea if they're doing it again.

Were you "diverse" because you were female though? When I read the app it seemed pretty apparent that I was not who they were looking for so I didn't even fill it out.

Wrt to Johanns last call for supplemental information tweet, I was wondering if I should write a LOCI. I wrote one of the essays and did an interview in March. I didn't originally write a LOCI because I felt like I would just be regurgitating my why NU and interview responses. Should I just write a LOCI?

I know at least one of the white guys paid for it.

*facepalm* You're right, ConLaw is killing my brain. I should know who the other scholarship people are...I honestly can't remember anyone except like three other people (2 white girls and a black guy)

It's definitely a diversity thing...it's even under the "Diversity Scholarships" section.

Seems from the application though that there are several different ways to qualify as diverse (gender, race, LGBT, socioeconomic, etc.)

yup. It was fun, free, and in no way necessary. This one is northwestern specific and a few days. I did it because I was bored out of my skull not working all summer. It did help me get my summer job because I'm working for the firm which sponsored it, but that's a weird case. It was a fun way to meet people before school started, both in your class and faculty. Fun and not entirely a waste of my time, but not that useful in terms of actual law school learnin'.

At the risk of outing myself, I am a white guy who paid. However, as Cobretti said, I just didn't bother filling the application out. If you're a white male but feel like you could write a good diversity statement, I'd say go for it, it can't hurt. It's only $1k so firms are probably pretty willing to spend money on the chance they like you when you go to the scholarship event.

Just wrote a 250 and applied, maybe i'll be the first diverse white guy ever.

The real question, do you think it was actually worthwhile?
Or am I giving up one of my last weeks of a steady income for some tips I could find elsewhere?
I'm honestly curious

This is just hearsay, but from what I've heard, in and of itself, it's kind of a waste of time - you may be ahead of the game for like the first week or two of law school maybe, but that's about it. However, my thinking is that if you get one of those scholarships from a big firm, it might be a nice first step to getting connected with them.

Yeah this thread was on page 2 for so long I almost stopped checking this entire forum. But I had to share the good news with UChi that I politely accepted their offer of non-admissions, so then I saw this thread toward the top again. Where it belongs.

Went ahead and submitted a Law Preview scholarship app, even though as has been stated, it doesn't seem like straight white guys with a parent with a master's degree are the kind of people they want. Interesting though that many of the other schools' scholarships explicitly state you must either be a racial/ethnic minority or LGBT, while this one does not.

I tried pulling the vet card. The only thing ethnically diverse about my app is if when they throw it away they use one of these:

I don't think NU students have to meet diversity requirements for this.

WUSTL has the same thing, but on our page it specifies that you need to be diverse
WashU wrote:To be eligible, applicants must be (i) a member of a racial/ethnic group which has been historically underrepresented in the legal profession (ii) a member of the LGBT community, or (iii) the first in your family (excluding siblings) to attend college. You must also be enrolled to begin classes at Washington University School of Law in the fall of 2013.

I appreciated the "Welcome to the class or 2016, we're processing your tuition payment" email this morning. Even though I submitted mine a month ago, some small paranoid part of me was afraid that I wasn't among the class and that something had gone wrong. Maybe enough people called that they thought they should clarify.

I tried twice with NU, once after getting admitted to a school a couple peer groups up the list, and a second time after said school offered me $$ and another peer school offered me $$$. NUU wouldn't budge, said they had "run out of scholarship funds" (paraphrased). YMMV.

That email scared the hell out of me for an irrational half a second. Visions of a $750 deposit flushing down a web tube toilet.
