Does anyone think it might actually be more difficult to be admitted ED (rather than RD) to Northwestern, due to the automatic $50k/year scholarship that comes with ED admission?

To my surprise, I noticed the 2012 entering AJD class profile lower-end numbers (i.e. 25%) are a good bit lower than the Regular 3 yr program (AJD=3.08-3.80/161-170; Reg=3.40-3.85/164-171). I initially thought the AJD would be higher, because the school would want to make sure they only admitted people with a proven track record of academic success to increase the liklihood of doing well in a condensed program. Obviously, I was wrong about the numbers.

Is part (or all) of this because AJD numbers aren't factored into the school's ranking? If that's the case, then I guess NU would be really free to select the applicants they feel would make the best addition to the school even if their numbers are a little lower b/c it wouldn't drag down medians, no? Or is there something completely different at play here regarding their AJD program? I also suppose if an applicant has years of quality work experience (like, say...6+ years of military experience :D ), that may be an indicator of their ability to handle the program.

Because my LSAC GPA is 3.33 and I have the work experience, I'm seriously considering the AJD program, so I'm trying to get some insight. For the current NU students, do you have any personal opinions on the AJD?

You write: "Is part (or all) of this because AJD numbers aren't factored into the school's ranking?" How do you know that?

I don't. I'm asking if this is the case.

Re-worded: Are AJD numbers factored into the school's ranking? If not, is this part (or all) of the reason for the lower 25% numbers?

It would kind of make sense if it wasn't included, but it's worth finding out.

I don't know whether AJD numbers are included or not, but I believe they have a slightly harder time attracting students to the AJD program than to the regular JD program, because there is still some uncertainty/skepticism about how the AJD degree affects job prospects. It's still a new program, and NU is the only GOOD school that has an AJD, so there's not much to compare it to, only anecdotal evidence from the first couple of classes. Which has been fine, but it's still a small sample size at this point.

You're right. I just hope it will be in my favor as my numbers are borderline for even the AJD. Regardless though I think it's a great program for me and for other older students with substantial WE (I have 8+ including military service).

WE is not rare at NU, keep in mind. I had 8 years WE when I applied. Military is very good WE, but there are all kinds here. I know of a VP from Goldman, a pro hockey player, and a pro French horn player to name a few.

Are you talking about people who applied and got accepted to the AJD or the 3 year JD

I'm talking about the 1L class right now. (although now that I think about it, both the hockey player and the French horn player are JD/MBA, pretty sure.)

I honetly think that the AJD is on a different playing field than the 3 year one and the class profile clearly indicates it IMHO. I think it shows that the process is done differently. For example: it's not based on rollover admissions. Last month an admissions officer told me not to hurry with my app because it will not get viewed until the first of the year. She said that with the AJD the adcom waits until all applications are in and only then starts to evaluate them. This is a clear signal that it's a different process.
Also if you look at the acceptance rate of the AJD you see that % wise many more applicants applied and got accepted vs. the 3 year JD.

Splitter checking in (app complete 11/8). I have four years work experience in a legal environment, coupled with a significantly poor GPA, so tossing my hat in to see if the WE outweighs the numbers! Good luck, everyone...

Yeah I think Northwestern's demonstrated a willingness to overlook lower GPA's in favor of WE, if the LSAT is within range. I'm not sure how good your chances are without more details, but if you were to have a decent shot at a T-14, it would be Northwestern =) Good luck!

If I can squeeze in with this low of a GPA, then anyone has a shot with the right LSAT score and WE, so stay tuned, all you splitters out there. It's a longshot, but it's a zero-shot if I don't apply at all!

Pretty sure you have a shot...but GULC might take you ED, in which case you don't have a shot

I dunno if this has been covered before. Can someone refresh my memory? Does the status checker for Northwestern actually say "under review" at any time? Or does it just go from Complete to Decision Available?

My app went complete at 11/12 and the date just changed to 11/28. Does this mean anything at all?

Finally had my interview after a 6 and 1/2 week delay. (I think the forgot about my request)

Anyway went well.

Only formal q's were Why law and why Northwestern.

We went to the same undergrad and had other common interests so more of a casual convo style.

Headed to NU tomorrow for my interview and spending the weekend visiting the city! Hopefully my trip helps them overlook my UGPA.

Any idea of when AJD acceptances will start coming? Also any ideas of when AJD students will get information on scholarships? It's tough that we have to make a decision before we probably will have scholarship information from any other schools.
