I don't believe this question has been asked, but forgive me if it has. I got my acceptance packet in the mail yesterday, with information about my scholarship. I'm not sure if I understand this part: "Therefore, your total monetary award is $45,000 to be distributed throughout your six semesters at UCLA School of Law. This award will include any need-based law grant you may receive from the UCLA Law Office of Financial Aid."

I'm hoping to qualify for need-based grants, but what does it mean that my award "will include" these grants? Does it mean that the merit scholarship will be added to need grants? I'm confused :?

I have the exact same question.

I read it to mean that because you're getting a merit scholarship that means that you won't be getting any need-based awards. if you were eligible for 5K a year of need-based award it will not be tacked on making your award 20K a year. Basically your award will stay at 15K a year regardless.

I thought it was a weird thing to say on their part.

It means if you do get need-based grants, it'll just reduce the merit scholarships you're getting so that you're still getting $45k over the 3 years. The only way you're getting more than $45k is if it's ALL need-based.

This is what I was afraid of... Is there a reason they do this? Other than any scholarships/grants I receive for school, I will be taking out loans to cover the rest of tuition. I need all the help I can get.

Another question- what is the average amount students receive in need-based grants? Is getting more than 45k possible?

Just clarifying here:

The day you guys got acceptance calls, they were followed up with emails, right? Was there electronic confirmation of any kind?

Yep, but it's not right away. It may take a day or two.

Dean Schwartz sent me an email but it was specifically referencing something that we talked about over the phone. The other confirmation took a few days.

$20,000/year appears to be the max amount for need-based grants (so $60,000k over the 3 years; lower if you get SA)

Interesting... I was told I can receive additional funding from need based aid. Since my merit scholly exceeds the $20,000 per year threshold UCLA sets, I'm interested to see how that plays out. Also, I know Michigan told some merit recipients that they are still eligible for need based and others that they are not, although the wording in their letters differed. My UCLA letter was worded in the exact same way all of yours were, but upon getting it clarified via e-mail was told to apply for need-based because I may get additional funds.

Hmm... I'll have to send an email out, as well. The wording of the letter is very odd.

Hey all. I've been lurking around these boards for about a year now, but never got around to actually joining because I could usually find the answers to whatever questions I had just by looking at what people told other TLS'ers.

I got my acceptance call from UCLA last week, and found the packet in my mailbox this morning. Haven't heard anything about a scholly offer though. Has anyone received offers in some later correspondence or does this just mean I didn't get anything?

Numbers are 3.71/177, so I thought I would have been offered something.

Not necessarily. I never got a scholarship offer from UCLA.

This. There were a number of individuals with stellar numbers who were not initially offered scholarships in previous cycles. A good friend of mine received significant scholarships at some t14's, sent his offers to UCLA and he ended up with a full-ride + stipend.

I wouldn't be too concerned at this point. If you REALLY want UCLA, getting the scholarship shouldn't be too much of a problem. But let's be honest, they know you'll most likely not be attending with those stats. If you are seriously considering UCLA, once you get some offers, make it known and show them what you other offers you receive.

Yup. The offer letter did state that they wanted to know about other scholarship offers (presumably so they can try to match or best them.)

It took a lot of initiative for me to get one (lesser numbers here too). It is totally worth it to contact them about the process if you're willing to do some research on UCLA and have good reasons for wanting to attend. If you really aren't interested in attending, I think the hoops they make you jump through will expose that. So, in short, probably only worth it to try if you could see yourself attending.

I agree with everyone else. I received my scholly offer in the mail but my numbers are not quite as stellar as yours (especially with that kick ass LSAT you got). If you're truly interested or received other T20-ish scholly's, send them an e-mail :)

Waitlisted today with a 166/3.3 ED. UCLA was my dream school but I can't say I'm surprised. My number were going to be a stretch. And actually, the mere fact that I was Waitlisted and not outright rejected with those numbers hopefully reflects the quality of my soft and my PS.

280 ED applications, 30 accepted through ED and 30 get WL. That's not too bad.
