Perhaps I should have done the regular UCLA c/o 2016 thread...but that thread is more or less nonexistent at this point

ucla's facebook page is loaded so I suspect that's where the conversation is.

Is it weird to join that before making a final decision to go there?

I suspect many have already decided to attend UCLA but many people are on multiple pages and have not decided.

I definitely enjoyed it. They provided good info, seemed open and honest about career prospects and student life, and had decent activities. It helped that the weather was absolutely gorgeous today, too!

Couldn't agree more. I was really impressed with how much time they spent on employment and how honest they were. PM me if you want more info!

This may be a dumb question, but anyone think UCLAs drop will make it easier to negotiate a scholarship up closer to USCs offer??

Offered $105,000 today. Make it closer to being affordable, but have the same offer from WUSTL. With living costs being so much more at UCLA, do you think I'd be able negotiate it up a bit?

What about getting off the wait list? Any additional hope there?

Negotiate people! If UCLA knows you're seriously interested, they will beat USC's offer. I got 120k from 'SC. UCLA offered me a full tuition scholarship today (this was my second increase after going from 90k to 105k a month ago). Don't be afraid to ask!

yeah that's a great deal. I think it may be even easier with the ranking drop.

Do you mind saying how you negotiated the offer? Did you focus on USC's offer while saying you'd rather go to UCLA?

I really enjoyed it too. The campus (and the weather!) were beautiful. The faculty, students, financial aid staff and Dean Schwartz himself were all really nice and went out of their way to talk to me, answer questions, etc. As a PI-focused person, I appreciated the career services' honesty regarding the difficulty of getting public interest jobs, especially before you've passed the bar, and the school's reaction to that -- funding bridge fellowships and creating 6 new year-long fellowships. Personally I don't see that as trying to stack employment stats (and the ones they provided clearly broke down which were school funded anyways), but rather as a necessary support schools need to provide to public interest students/recent grads in this economy and the public interest field in general.

Edit: not saying don't negotiate. Just saying not to be disappointed if you don't get results like johnmarshall's.

Agreed. But I have money at some T14s and UCLA completely lowballed me with their offer. Why won't you let me love you, UCLA?

Confused. According to USNEWS, out of state tuition at UCLA is $51,715 per year. According to UCLA's site, it is $53,958 per year. Is USNEWS stating next year's tuition, or are they just on drugs?

you shouldn't have said they were your top choice. they might think you will go to UCLA anyway if they don't give you money, you should have made it clear that you have no favorite among those schools but will go to the one that gives you the most money.

No. Why would they give someone money that is lukewarm about the school? Schools like to get warm and fuzzies just like you would. As long as you pose it as your top choice but unrealistic without more money, you will be golden.

I don't think saying that UCLA is your top choice is a bad thing as it does show a willingness to commit as long as the money is right. I could see the school being equally hesitant to up the offer for someone who comes across as just trying to squeeze as much as possible equally out of four or five comparable schools.
