Thanks for the response, wayward! Lots of food for thought. I guess my absolutes are leaving my current job and eventually doing big law. long distance, however, is something I can live with. Hopefully I get into Penn, we'll see. I think you're right in saying this will be a long cycle for me.

They don't believe you're actually interested with those numbers. Shntn their asses and tell them to show you the money. Btw I wouldn't shoot for need based stuff because I could see those funds potentially "drying up" in future years. Go after merit aid that can't be taken away from you.

Oh, that's true.

My problem is that I've gotten progressively more debt-averse as the cycle goes on...another poster on here somewhere said something about realizing that it's not Monopoly Money which is definitely happening to me  Not sure the best way to contact them about $...should I wait until the need-based offer comes in? Call/email? Who do I call/email?

I would email Rob Schwartz and ask if you can discuss your financial aid package. He's pretty quick to respond and I'm sure he will be happy to talk to you about it.

I hear you on being more debt-averse as the cycle goes on, I'm in the same boat.

the initial merit offer was with acceptance; they got back to me with grant aid information like 2-3 days after my Need Access went through by email. Disclaimer warning though: it was a negligible amount.

Thanks! From previous experiences, does UCLA send an email or do I have to wait for the good ol' fashioned paper?

fallingup wrote:UCLA scholarship would bring COA to 75K. Still waiting on Michigan scholarship. Cornell and NU are not options for me because my partner is starting grad school in the fall as well - we refuse to be long distance and he got into Ann Arbor, Hopkins, and Columbia and is waiting on UCLA, Harvard, and UNC so my options are limited by that. Duke is not a desirable option for us for personal reasons but we would choose it an extreme scenario (ie, if I got a great scholarship but did not from Michigan). I might consider Georgetown if I got a great scholarship but I'd more likely use that to negotiate with Michigan.

I absolutely want big law and nothing else - I have a decent upper 5 figures job right now already, I'm not trying to go to law school to work in the legal equivalent of my current job. Basically I am praying and dreaming that Penn somehow comes through OR that Michigan gives me a workable scholarship OR that my partner gets into Harvard so we are forced to be long distance (because I am not getting into lolHLS and if he gets into his program there, duh he has to go) and I am then free to choose NU with scholarship.

The wrench in all this? I want to practice in CA.

I am facing a similar but arguably worse situation with regards to my gf and our mutual decision-making. its been the worst part of this cycle. She applied to graduate school and her offers are not in very palatable locales for me, although we are still hoping every day that NYU comes through for her. We are afraid of the long distance option too but not sure what to do about it. I empathize with you. However I do think its odd, as the other poster mentioned, that you are hoping your partner can go to a school you aren't going to (Harvard)? This is a bizarre hope if you truly want to stay in the same place, although of course you must root for your partner if thats the best program for him.

good luck either way. be comforted that other people are making these painful grad school decisions as well. it's never easy.

WL.

Sent a LOCI last night because I hadn't heard anything since November. I guess that didn't work out.

So after getting the admit email I went to set up a username/password for the admitted site. For some reason the username/password did not save to my computer and I can't remember them. Anyone know how I can re-access this info?

Just email/call the admissions office. I'm sure they can help you. Congratulations by the way!

I think I and my guy just lucked out with our programs because the good law programs happen to be at the same school or close to schools with good master's programs in his field. It sounds like that's not the case with your girlfriend, which sucks. I am friends with a couple in the same situation - they're going to be 8 hours driving distance apart starting in the fall. The distance sucks but they're both in the best programs they could find, which in the long run is the best strategy.

Currently, Michigan is an option for me and my guy, with the school being top 10 for law and #1 for his particular program. Going to Michigan together is not a bad outcome, assuming my scholarship negotiation works out at all. If Michigan doesn't come through with money, he could go to JHU and I could go to Georgetown (assuming Georgetown came through with money which is more likely than Michigan) or he could go to UNC and I could go to Duke. None of these options is perfect or cheap, but they will work. The one situation in which we would consider long distance is if he got into Harvard. (If you think it's bizarre to hope for your partner to go to the number 1 school in the country, then I'm not really sure why you are on a site called "Top Law Schools"...)

Thanks so much! And yea, I figured I can do that but was seeing if there was a recover username/password button or something of the sort, but doesn't seem like it. Didn't want to be that guy who cant even remember his own password but I'm probably making a bigger deal than need be.

Does anybody know if UCLA considers Minnesota to be a peer when it comes to scholarships? It seems unlikely to me, but I'd like to know if anyone has any experience that might be relevant. Thanks!

Highly doubt it but always worth a shot!

Eta: I have a full ride at Minn which makes it 100K cheaper than my offer at UCLA and UCLA didn't budge. But from my experience UCLA doesn't even view UT as a peer and they are the very definition of peer schools.

Minnesota is one of the first if not the first behind what UCLA would consider a peer school.

I'm in the same situation. Minn seems insanely generous this cycle, but, my god, the cold. Thanks for the info!

If my experience is representative then they don't view UT as a peer. Might just be USC and all the schools that are considerably better that they consider a "peer."

Zuck, perhaps a better way to phrase it is, 'competitor', in that UCLA (and 'SC) just don't lose many cross-admit battles to Minnesota or Texas that are not already instate there. Once one drops below GULC/Vandy (and yes, UCLA), the portability of the LS degree drops off even faster than employability.

UT,at instate rates, is a wonderful option for someone who wants to practice in Texas, so they'd be limiting their chances to return to attend LS in SoCal. Ditto, Minnesota and the upper midwest.
