That's kind of a weird question. There have been about 139 LSN admits this cycle, and LSN usually represents ~15% of Harvard's overall admit pool. If we extrapolate, that's 927 admits so far to fill about 560 seats. So presently there are an estimated -366 seats available.

Glad you asked?

I have no good reason for caring, but this question has been very interesting to me. So, here's my best guess:

Looking at prior data, they extend between 810-860 offers of admission for 560 seats, so >900 is probably too high at this point especially if a waitlist-->admit counts the same as a regular admit in enrolling class stats. There are 493 members in the admitted student Facebook group a/o today and I don't think its too much to assume that most admitted students join that group. So, using that as a baseline, here's another way to guess about available seats:

If 75% of the regular admits are on the FB group:

~657 regular admits with an anticipated 50% yield: 329
Enrolling prior year(s) deferrals (no idea, but let's say 10%) : 55
~203 waitlist admits with a higher 87% yield: 176

Total: 560

Again, just a guess that rests on assumptions that vary from plausible to purely speculative, but I don't think this is over by a long shot. Them loading up on interviews from the WL now says to me that they want to be primed to admit a bunch of people right after May 1. Good luck to everyone out there!

I just posted on your choose a law school post txdude. I think you're gonna get H off the waitlist. Regardless of what they say, I think H likes their own (HYP folk) and your 167 is plenty enough. Just be patient.

Thank you for putting in the work to figure all this out! W/r/t to deferrals, I think our estimate might be a little on the high side. Y matriculated 8 deferrals (4%) in the 2015 class -- I don't know how that percentage compares to H (maybe we could figure this out if any other T14s published info on deferrals), but unless we're able to find any other info sources re: deferrals, I'd suggest assuming the same deferral rate as Y. Which leads to:

~657 regular admits with an anticipated 50% yield: 329
Enrolling prior year(s) deferrals (assuming same 4% deferral rate as Y) : 22
~240 waitlist admits with a higher 87% yield: 209

Total: 560

We should also take into account that WL--> Accept cannot defer, meaning the realm of accepted students who are eligible to defer is probably closer to 400 than 560 (using Y's deferral rate, we would expect 16 deferrals). Even if you use the more conservative 10% assumption, that still leaves almost 200 WL--> accept, which is comforting but perhaps a little too optimistic. H's yield is probably higher than the 50% we assume. Still good to know there's hope though! Thanks for the info!

Actually, historic LSN data backs that number up pretty well. Check out the OP of the waitlist thread. Last year we had 28 WL->Accept, and (as mentioned earlier) LSNx7 is a rough approximation of the whole.

Encouraging news all around.

Is there a reason you think May 1 is the next admit wave? I'm wondering because i signed up for a pretty late date for my interview and am hoping that doesn't put me at a disadvantage.

May 1st is the deposit deadline. At 12am May 2, Harvard will know what their medians are and what gaps in their class they have to fill. May 1st won't have a wave, but I'm sure there will be one Friday the 3rd or early the next week.

Seat deposits are due then.

Since they are taking the time to interview a significant portion of the waitlist prior to May, it would be reasonable to guess that they might start WL-->Admits the week of May 1. However, they are equally as likely to wait until the end of May... no one can say for sure.

Anyone willing to do the same extrapolation for JS/KB1s?

Just curious: If I received an award/honor, is it okay to simply send a nice, brief 2-paragraph update explaining the award and explaining how I received it. I don't know if I need to work it into another one page LOCI about how it fits perfectly with my interest in attending HLS.

just posted in the harvard waitlist forum, but will put it here as well:

post JS1 WL just now :( :(

170/3.9x. It was always a long shot, but it feels like I was so close...

I figure I'll reply to the waitlist email with my LOCI? Can someone let me know if thats not the right thing to do please.

Also, would it be appropriate for a LOCI to sort of fill in one of the gaps from my JS1? I felt like there was one thing I could have expanded on that would have knocked it out of the park, and I kind of missed the opportunity. I dunno. Any thoughts?

PMed a more detailed answer, but in short, I think my interview went well, with the exception of a couple of questions I wasn't expecting about whether I really wanted to move to the East Coast. I also had a couple other issues with my app that, combined with my low-ish GPA and last-minute submission, may have hurt me.

Taking a small detour from admissions stuff, my thoughts are with those who have been injured/killed in Boston today. Very sad stuff. It is events like these that remind me how fragile and precious life is.

Hey El! yea it would be awesome but lets be honest if I had any form of shot I would've got a JS1 by now. I don't know why they haven't cut the chord yet. Last school I'm waiting to hear from.

I just spoke to someone who applied in the first month after the application opened and he just got an interview request for this week.
