Re: Harvard c/o 2016 Applicants (2012-2013)
I was under the impression that a large part of admissions being so numbers driven came from the value employers/prospective students/the nation in general see within the USN rankings and USN rankings being most easily influenced by the numbers of your incoming class.
I read somewhere on this website that when UT cracked the T14, their OCI success rate or something went up pretty dramatically.
I never saw a source to confirm this, but there is something to say about your schools rankings correlating with better job prospects for your graduates, all else equal.
As for the whole softs vs numbers difference in regards to socioeconomic ties, I would say it was once more of a coin flip as to which was more biased but with the expansion of the internet and easy/cheap-to-access information regarding how to prep for these tests, the gap has closed considerably. The same cannot be said for building a resume full of significant softs.

Agree with your assessment. Virtually no process under the sun is "fine as is" ... processes and systems have to change because the environments within which they operate are constantly changing. If indeed there is an adjustment underway that considers softs more "holistically" ...it's got more to do with law schools having a process that serves their objectives and less to do with "classism." It does seem to make sense that with a sharp decline in applications, there's probably no more suitable opportunity to bring work experience a little closer to the center of the evaluation. My own experience this cycle is that schools are treating the numbers as a threshold and considering the softs thoroughly.ChampagnePapi wrote: I think admissions are going to become more holistic but not necessarily in the way people think. I don't think "predicting academic performance" of applicants is really a logical or necessary objective to what they are doing nowadays, although I'm sure its part of the general groupthink. Everyone is on a damn curve so who gives a shit about how you think they're going to perform. Anyways, what really may have an impact is the economy and the bad press law schools are getting. I think schools will evaluate candidates more on how they think they will do in OCI or come hiring time. Admitting socially awkward or mentally weak candidates can hurt employment stats in the long run, which COULD hurt USNWR ranking but also the school's reputation and marketability in general. So its not really holisitic, but its more than GPA/LSAT.
Then again, this isnt really an issue at HLS where everyone's getting jobs. But you could see it at non-HYS T14's, and I think we're seeing it, with Chicago's new interview process.
Combine that with YP, non-URM diversity (which I think doesn't get discussed enough on here, schools want things like geographic diversity to market themselves), and REAL softs (not frat/internship/volunteer BS, but the type of strong softs that matter like military, awards, etc), and you have enough non-GPA/LSAT/URM factors to explain why some people with numbers get in and some do not. But B-School isn't that holistic either, you need the numbers to be considered, which is the same as law school and that will never change

They will allow you to send updates through email. Just email admissions asking them to submit the update.2012applicant2013 wrote:Is there a way to update materials to Harvard? (email, snail mail, LSAC)

Ha! Hadn't seen that, but now there's an additional practical reason.Lavitz wrote:Lol, were you reading the In at Harvard thread?amsong wrote:Marry me.spicyyoda17 wrote:Who should we nominate to go to the Harvard applicant thread and tell them that being married with a kid is a soft they may want to pursue?kingsfield69 wrote:Make it 4 of us. I don't have "playlists." That's the beauty of my sets. I feel the rhthyms and dynamics of the party/setting and respond accordingly. It is versatile and amorphic.amsong wrote:Sample playlist, or it didn't happen.helix23 wrote:wow a TLS wedding. Has it been done? Please let me DJ. I have a great taste in music.

This is that moment, which occurs at least once/day, when I say "dang I hope Helix goes to HLS."helix23 wrote:I don't have "playlists." That's the beauty of my sets.
