Are you not interested in YS?
A bit, obviously, but I have my sights zeroed in on Harvard. Whether that's because I think they're the one that I have the best shot at is hard to say.
+1. hard to be set on a school that has no problem denying 180/4.0s
LOL. Since when does Harvard routinely deny 180/4.0's? I was WL'd (and remain so) with numbers above both medians, but I'm even an exception, I would say.

If you have numbers like that, you're getting into Harvard... unless you have some egregious application mistake or C&F issue.

Yeah he was obviously talking about YS, not Harvard. Do you have any idea why you didn't get in? Something like what you mentioned above?

Neither of those... I have an alternate theory about what happened to me. PM me if you're that interested.

The moment you decided that if you're going to dream you may as well dream big. The most they can say is no, but I won't even get a response if I don't apply so I'm checking in for Harvard.

FML.

ETA: Is it that many people don't apply to Harvard, or do they just not admit to applying. I've noticed so many schools ahead of it in terms of numbers of apps on LSN.

I wouldn't apply to Harvard is I had anything less than a 3.7 (non-URM, of course), but I'd definitely still apply to CCN.

Also, checking in.

From personal experience, I can tell you that you're in the ballpark. You just have to have very good softs to get over the hump. Expect at least a WL.

If anyone has questions, I'm attending HLS in the fall and I got in with sub-25% GPA and above median LSAT. Harvard definitely looks at your softs if you're on the borderline.
I did not know this. I may have querstions.

Wow, that is a generous C&F deal they have there.

Anyone a little confused by the writing section on the application?

Yeah, same here. I wrote a lot of papers in undergrad...

I'll come back to it later. I'm in no rush with HYS apps. If anyone has any insight, feel free to share with the thread. Thanks!

It sounds like their looking for a unique paper not just any "undergrad paper". Something that showcased your research/writing abilities.

I agree. You can pretty much tell that they expect something on the level of a thesis or publication -- not something like a 2-page sonnet explication. If you've ever done writing of this sort, this question should be pretty fairly straightforward.

For the unsure, these are just my thoughts: the way they phrased it reminds me of the "influenced" question on the Cornell app. There seems to be enough ambiguity where you would probably be fine discussing something like an important paper assignment for class (research papers especially) -- as long as the professor reviewed one or two drafts and met with you to discuss it before handing in the final version. It might not be exactly what they were looking for, but if it meets the "multiple revisions" and "academic adviser" criteria, I can't imagine the adcomms would hold it against you. It's probably better than leaving it blank and suggesting that you've never done any substantial writing.

There's also a short thread on this in the admissions forum here
