You just answered your own question. I really don't think it makes a huge difference in your application. Pick a name out of a hat if need be.ctmx wrote:I wasnt influenced by anyone to apply to cornell, I simply researched about the school and felt it would be a good fit. Are we supposed to submit the Dean's Certification via snail mail?

Hey everyone, what do you all think about doing a "Why Cornell?" I know they ask specifically on the app, but it's only a few lines. I don't know if Cornell would YP me...but I don't want them to.

If you're above the median gpa + LSAT, I wouldn't worry about it too much. If you're a little lower on the numbers, I would save it in case you're waitlisted and turn the "Why Cornell" essay into a form of LOCI.

Uh, this is kind of a legitimate concern at these many of these schools. I think we all know they care about the rankings, and I don't want to get waitlisted. Let's stop being so judgmental - these threads are supposed to be supportive and helpful!HBBJohnStamos wrote:Subtle.Eichörnchen wrote:Hey everyone, what do you all think about doing a "Why Cornell?" If you're really going to pretend that TLS isn't T14-centric, I can't help you dude. Also, save the picking stupid fights and flexing for the lounge. These threads are supposed to be useful.HBBJohnStamos wrote:Relax brah.

Re: Cornell c/o 2016 Applicants (2012-2013)
at the above exchanges.
Anyway, Eich, to address your original question, I don't think you have to worry about YP from Cornell even if you're above both 75ths, since they aren't notorious for it. So I think it depends on what you would write and what the rest of your app / background suggest. If your Why Cornell is just going to be an expanded list of what you would cover in the three sentences, and if you think the adcomms could envision you fitting in at Cornell based on your app, I imagine you wouldn't need the extra essay.
Personally, I feel like someone reading my app would get the impression that --if admissions were decided via Sorting Hat-- I'd be the guy muttering "not Cornell, not Cornell" under my breath. And since I have a good idea for a Why Cornell which would convince them otherwise by highlighting something about me not apparent in the rest of my app and which can't be conveyed in three sentences, I'd probably benefit by including one. Of course, YMMV.

Yeah I dont think Cornell YP's much. Id write a why cornell but I wouldnt be overly concerned.Lavitz wrote: at the above exchanges.

Re: Cornell c/o 2016 Applicants (2012-2013)
Thank you! This is what I was looking for. For example, I know UVA is notorious for YPing, and I wasn't sure about Cornell's rep for it. I was stuck between the mindset of not submitting an addendum unless it's really necessary, and really wanting to get in.Lavitz wrote: at the above exchanges.

Also, I totally loled. Such a stellar analogy.Lavitz wrote:Personally, I feel like someone reading my app would get the impression that --if admissions were decided via Sorting Hat-- I'd be the guy muttering "not Cornell, not Cornell" under my breath. Thanks for backing that up - I think I can explain my interest in the few lines to avoid having the admissions officer have to read more than is necessary.top30man wrote:Yeah I dont think Cornell YP's much. Id write a why cornell but I wouldnt be overly concerned.
I feel so much better now.

If I am at/above 1 of the medians, what is the TLS opinion on writing a "Why Cornell"?

Cornell does not like splitters so definitely write one.MillerTheThriller wrote:If I am at/above 1 of the medians, what is the TLS opinion on writing a "Why Cornell"?

Re: Cornell c/o 2016 Applicants (2012-2013)
Thanks. I know it's pretty much an auto-ding but it's worth a shot. What I don't understand is why schools just don't fill their classes with splitters and reverse splitters, that way they can keep their medians and their class sizes by accepting 2 candidates instead of 1 (and would probably be able to charge sticker to both of them).Ruxin1 wrote:Cornell does not like splitters so definitely write one.MillerTheThriller wrote:If I am at/above 1 of the medians, what is the TLS opinion on writing a "Why Cornell"?

Is this why their LSAT median isn't 170+ ??Ruxin1 wrote:Cornell does not like splitters so definitely write one.MillerTheThriller wrote:If I am at/above 1 of the medians, what is the TLS opinion on writing a "Why Cornell"?
