Hey guys - I have never posted in here but I had an update on 6/18 on the reserve list and was just accepted a few minutes ago via email. Pretty average stats and good softs but for all those who had recent updates, hopefully this is a good sign!

In off the wait list. No mention of $, so I'm not really expecting any.

Just accepted off reserve as well. No $$ either, looks like I'm playing the powerball for a few days.

168/3.26 with several years of pretty solid WE (idk if that matters though)

Wow. Cornell's never been so generous with splitters and reverse splitters.

So sad with my sub median numbers :( :( :(

On reserve some time in March. Date changed 6/3 and 6/17 with the email coming on the 18th.

Hey! I recently got off the waitlist, too. And, of course, I've had to face the realization that there is no money left at this point, and I will need to finance everything with loans. I am hearing a lot of reasons from people why I shouldn't go to Cornell -- the immense debt burden, the need to shoot for BigLaw to have a chance at making a dent in my loans, the way that carrying so much debt will limit my choices -- but I haven't heard any reasons why I should choose Cornell. Can anyone here give me some? Can anyone provide any reasons for why they believe that earning a JD from Cornell is in fact worth the colossal debt? I would really like to hear the other side of the story! Thanks.

You should make a thread in the "choosing a law school" forum.

I think there are times when sticker at Cornell is justified. But you have a full-ride at WUSTL, right? So I can't really tell you whether or not Cornell at sticker is a better choice for you without knowing your goals.

Cornell is a great school, and if Biglaw--especially in NYC--is something you actually want to do, then it might be worth it. That's why people take out the debt for it. They're shooting for Biglaw or one of its exit options (in-house counsel, midlaw, etc.) and Cornell gives them a much better chance at breaking into Biglaw.

Or they don't have any other options which give them both: 1) a debtload manageable without Biglaw and 2) a good chance of some sort of legal job. So they prioritize number 2 over number 1.

At WUSTL with a full-ride you'd have both. Cornell still gives better job prospects, but WUSTL's no TTT.

If you're picky about the type of legal employment and it's something Cornell is much better at guaranteeing, then that would change the equation. But again, it's hard to say whether Cornell at sticker is worth the debt in general because it depends on goals and opportunity cost.

I didn't make that choice, so I can't share my reasoning as an example. However, here's a thread on the subject if you care to read it: http://top-law-schools.com/forums/viewt ... 1&t=205963

Reasons why one might be inclined to pick cornell:

-Strong Biglaw feeder school (especially to NYC/east coast)

-small class size

-small, rural town (if you want more of a college feel and less commuter/city) -with great wine to boot

-Cheap cost of living

-ivy/t14 reputation

-strong international law program

-ability to take supplemental classes/dual degree at cornell university

-amazing campus (though I hear it's under construction?)

...all that being said, those reasons don't necessarily justify sticker debt, unless you want them to. It depends on what your options are, what your goals and interests are, and what kind of debt you feel comfortable taking on.

Thank the super awesome decrease in applicant pool, which has been caused by the not-so-awesome dearth of good legal jobs in recent years. I can tell you that there are a number of people who have recently graduated from decent schools but who work as examiners at the USPTO (i.e. not necessarily an elite job for a recently minted lawyer). They work as examiners because they could not get a good firm job coming out of school with ok grades. I'm talking about examiners who studied law at Notre Dame, Berkeley, UIUC.

Anyways, the boost might not be enough to get us into Cornell though. Do you think you'll ride the waitlist, which I believe is imminent at this point?
I think I will because Cornell is still the best choice I'd have.

Anyone else admitted off reserve bother to ask for aid? And if so, has anyone gotten a final answer? I sent a copy of the new aid offer GW sent me when I dropped for Cornell and Cornell so far has only said "we'll get back to you on that." I don't expect anything, but it would be nice.

Yes, the courtyard is under construction right now. It's scheduled to be finished after our 1L year.

Did anyone else receive the email from Cornell regarding final notice of seat deposit?

I am utterly angered by the poor handling of this matter.

Per student packet:

To reserve your space in our class; the full deposit of $900 is due as soon as possible. In order to hold your seat until we receive your full deposit, we will need confirmation of your intent to enroll by June 10th.

Per the email today:

You have previously contacted us regarding your intent to enroll. However, we are contacting you now because we have not received your seat deposit. As you may recall from the materials sent to you with your admit letter, we requested that you send the seat deposit as soon as possible, to formally secure your place in the class of 2016. Unfortunately, because we haven’t received your seat deposit our offer of admission has expired.

I didn't get that. I guess their as soon as possible=a set amount of time, so I'm curious as why they didn't just tell you that time frame in the first place. I'd call em up.

Wow. Surprised they didn't give you any notice. I'd call them.

I too was a bit mystified by the lack of a specific deadline for submitting the deposit. With so much at stake, people are naturally going to hold off on committing for as long as possible if there isn't a clearly defined deadline.

Just checked. mine had a deadline in the packet, its 6/20 at 4:30. So all things considered it was about a 48 window. Anyone else terrified of the debt since there is likely no money left?

I told myself that if I get in off reserve and do not get money, than I will not attend and retake for next cycle.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
Just kidding ... it's still FREE!
