Wow this along with the 172/3.85 makes me think georgetown hijacked Cornell's admissions office in order to keep that number 13 position that or you guys are high up in the mafia or well known drug dealers.

It doesn't have to be, though. If you are prepared for the grind, know what you're getting in to, and make the best decisions you can considering your desires, it's whatever. It's not a GOOD situation, but it's better than some alternatives.

If you know you're in deep shit with loans, then realize you need to pay attention in class and study 24/7 (essentially if you are not the genius type). Don't gchat or facebook during class lectures. This won't make people sympathize with you when you complain in 3L about having no job offers.

This will probably be the last time I post about this in this thread (though I'll happily PM thoughts because I sort of like talking about this and speculating), but I want to draw back any optimism that was in that post. It's decidedly a negative return but there's a benefit to going in to it aware and knowing what you're struggling against than not. The point I always try to make is that no matter how well you do in class, no matter how well you may perform in Big Law, there are little to no guarantees out of it. You will almost certainly not make partner. You will almost certainly be pushed out before you're a senior associate. There is no outright meritocracy. And then what comes next?

This is an incredibly good post on an incredibly good blog that I'm sure everyone here knows about, but even though it's long I hope you'll read it since it addresses the issue of 'What next?' after BigLaw.

I just spent 30 minutes reading through the post and comments. I am so terrified right now. And I actually have a good career fall back option. Still so so afraid.

I recently received an offer amounting to a little over 1 year of law school tuition and my mom was happy, saying that I shouldn't be afraid to take on loans to pay of for almost the other two (assuming I don't get any need-based grants). After reading the article posted a couple of posts above, it reaffirmed what I already knew. The job market sucks, and I need to stay away from loans as much as possible.

But, it also makes me annoyed at all the people who go to law school without having a strong passion for it. Don't know what to do after undergrad? Go to law school! Feel like you want a challenge? Go to law school! Can't find a job? Go to law school! Scared of entering the real world and you're looking to needlessly extend your academic career? Go to law school! Sooner or later, you get way too many lawyers and and not enough jobs. Essentially, the bubble gets too big and bursts. I'm really hoping that somehow the bad job market will lower the amount of people in law school (some signs suggest this) and it will get better.

Assuming no C and F issues or other undesirable application issues, could they be doing this because they have "over accepted" applicants and they are now waiting until the deposit deadlines so they can start going through the WL to fill out the class?

There is only 200 or so seats. Possible?
