Submitted 11/17, complete 12/12. Apparently it took so long to go complete because they had 12 other people in their system with the same name.

Yeah I know I just meant I don't have a decision. Oh well.

Went complete today, so I guess I'm under review? Long shot with my numbers, but who knows. Also, kudos to Michigan for working today, I had to send a few emails to other schools who all gave me the "we're on vacation" e-mail.

I poked around the admitted student website and it turns out I've been admitted for the summer start. I'm a little disappointed. I know on my application I said either would be fine, but I recently found another pre-law program during the summer that I would like to attend. Does anyone have any information on switching terms?

How long after admission have people been seeing scholarship offers appear on the ASW?

I'm hoping that the recent employment statistics are an anomaly. According to this thread, Michigan fared much better prior to 2011 and this particular post makes it seem like Michigan just had a temporary bout of under-performing rather than sinking into decline. It's still worrisome though especially for someone like me who would be attending at sticker (as much as I love Michigan's collegial persona).

Seriously, kappycaft1, you are off the charts with these statistic compilations. I truly appreciate your dedication to compiling statistics and altering your avatar :P

As for the summer start question... I was actually really excited about being accepted into it. From what I hear 1) 1Ls have more grades to show employers and 2) applying/preparing earlier for clerkships. Personally for me, I think the benefit is just having an extra semester to do an externship or some overseas project/learning.

I am unsure how doing summer start would actually negatively impact job prospects. If someone can elaborate on that, it would be greatly appreciated!

I just want to say that I doubt that you were viewed as a borderline applicant that wasn't good enough for fall start :P Especially if you can get into UChi and others (ie Penn), it must mean your application is stellar.

But interesting, I have to admit I haven't really delved deep into researching about different schools yet. Didn't apply ED to Mich but was placed into summer start and didn't realize that all who ED'd into Mich had to start in the summer.

Thanks for the info!

Thanks for the analysis as always, kappycaft1, even if it's not what I want to hear.

Michigan has been my only acceptance so far and I'm hoping other options will open up next month though I am a borderline applicant myself.

Question for admits who also got scholarship offers?

What is the stip at Michigan (if they have one, I know some schools only say you must maintain "good academic standing"). I am currently abroad and cannot check my scholarship letter and couldn't find this on Admitted Student Website. I'd just like to compare all the stips for my scholarship offers and Michigan is the only one missing in my list. If anyone could provide it to me I'd be thankful :) (my scholarship offer is 15k/year)

You have to take a full course load and maintain a 2.0. And I think there was something in there about not getting expelled in nicer terms.

kappycaft1 wrote:I know your feeling, and I did a ton of research after getting accepted to Michigan's summer start program because I assumed that I would have to choose between that and Cornell (before I received other unexpected acceptances). Fortunately, I came to the conclusion that there is no conclusive data about summer start being bad. Unfortunately, I came to the conclusion that there is no conclusive data about summer start being good.

Even so, I probably would have taken Michigan at sticker over Cornell with a decent scholarship because of Michigan's Japanese law program (a.k.a. Professor Mark West). The first foreigner to become a partner at a native Japanese law firm was actually a graduate of Michigan. This is just one example of why Michigan was appealing to me despite its low placement rate, but there are a ton of other great aspects about the school, including its awesome alumni network, so I wouldn't worry too much about it. (As long as you get decent grades I don't think it will be that big of an issue. :D)

That's neat. I minored in Japanese but am really rusty from not having used it at all. I don't know anything about Japanese law programs but my fiance worked on some Japanese doc review projects as a paralegal so I guess there's a fair bit to do in terms of relations between US-Japan transnational corporations. Congrats on Chicago by the way!

I'm hoping it's not too hard to switch to fall start/defer for a year because I'll be starting a new job soon and don't exactly want to just leave after only a few months there as eager as I am to move to Ann Arbor.

I doubt I'll get a scholarship offer from Michigan, but, just in case, where does the scholarship information pop up on the ASW? I won't be able to get my acceptance package until mid-Jan, so there's no way for me to check if I got a scholarship offer or not.

Most of the offers have come through snail mail. If you do get a scholarship, you will see it in the "Mail & Money" section of ASW

It pops up under "mail and money" in the ASW, and then they follow up about a week and a half later (in my case) with a regular-sized letter giving you the details.
