I would hold off, but of course it's a gamble.

Thanks for the link -- pretty useful.

I think I will write a gushing why UVA essay, apply RD and sit on it, and maybe submit the ED form later. I'm pretty sure that applying ED this early in the game increases my chances significantly, but maybe it's worth the gamble to just wait and see if I hear from my first choice. :s Oh, decisions, decisions...

It varies from year to year. It's useless to speculate at this point as it all depends on their RD pool.
Historically over the past few years they've taken very few off of their waitlists. They use their ED program to fill up a good portion the class (though who knows how things will turn out this year).

While I would LOVE to attend UVA, it is my second choice. I have a minimal shot at getting into my first choice, depending on how strong the admissions committee finds my softs to be, and I'm trying to decide if I should just bite the bullet and go ED for UVA and call it a day...

Whoa there numbers buddy, how goes it? I have a 3.38/170 and decided not to apply ED to UVA, just for some reference. Good luck in your decision.

Hey numbers twin! I ended up going ED on Friday. It will be interesting to see how this turns out.

Best of luck! I'm very confident you'll get in, from what I saw researching my own chances ED.

You got a phone call? I thought they only did that when you're accepted.

It seems if you do not hear for awhile, then that means that they might just be waiting for an ed application. All of the people I know who got in would have gotten in ED anyway. Or so I presume, they certainly had the numbers

Does anyone have the link to another thread about wL at UVA ed? I am curious what some of the FAQ's mean on their website- especially how often people kept in contact with them? LOCI?...

I'm a 169/3.94. UVA is my top choice. Would love to hear any feed back on whether or not I should ED. I'm leaning that way now.

I wouldn't: http://myLSN.info/kzjsy6

1) UVA is only 56%, but it looks like that's a result of YP. If UVA is really your top choice, I'm sure you can write a very convincing Why Virginia essay to avoid YP. Even if you get waitlisted, a strong LOCI will almost certainly get you in.

2) NYU and Cal are both strong possibilities, and you're a lock at the lower T-14. Any of those could be great leverage for scholarship negotiation with UVA. If you ED, chances are you're going at sticker.

3) It's possible you get into NYU or Duke or whatever, attend the ASW and fall in love with them. Since you're in great shape to get into UVA RD (assuming Why Virginia/LOCI) I don't see the value in forgoing this possibility.

1) How much would ED improve my chances?

2)Point taken on the leverage. I had considered that, but my question is how much leverage would I really have in terms of dollar amount? If I'm chancing acceptance to save $45k, I'm not sure it's worth it since I'm still going to be in for another ~$150.

I mean if you ED, you're agreeing to go if admitted. I don't think there's a better way of expressing interest than that, and they wouldn't YP someone who would be bound, if admitted, to attend.

And you can try to leverage if you RD, send in a LOCI/Why UVA, and get admitted. But if you're dead set on UVA regardless of COA, then ED is your best bet.

1) Impossible to say -- there's no data point of someone with your numbers EDing. I would imagine your chance of acceptance would be close to 100% though.

2) 100% of those accepted with your numbers RD got a $45k scholarship last year. I know that's not ginormous compared to your debt load, but it's a significant amount of money. You might be able to play UM and UVA off each other for more, or leverage a $60k Duke scholly. That risk is worth it to me, because I don't think there's any chance you aren't accepted as long as you show interest through Why UVA and a LOCI, but obviously this is a completely personal choice without a wrong answer.

Thanks for all the answers! Last question: ED effectively ends my chance for $$?

This is something that I've been thinking about myself. I'm not sure if people who ED don't get money because 1) they're by definition borderline* and so wouldn't receive money in any case, or because 2) they lack leverage (the school knows you have to attend so they have no incentive to offer money). It's probably impossible to tell because of 1). What I can tell you is UM and Duke seem to be the only T-14s that offer money to EDers with any regularity, and even they are stingy (NU doesn't count because their ED is a full-ride scholarship): http://myLSN.info/a5uww6

*If you have the numbers to get a $60k+ scholly from MVP, there's literally no reason to ED. You can avoid YP with Why X/LOCI, and you're sacrificing money from CCN and a legitimate shot at HYS. I can't imagine any rational person making this decision.
