I think you should visit the prof with the B... Lay it out in formal logic:

if bruwinning gets a B, they will be sad :( . bruwinning will be sad only if they do not get into Columbia. Therefore, if bruwinning's prof is ethical, they will give them a A-.

I (a he for clarification) am wondering why this has been so different from other cycles. Haven't ED acceptances typically come out in multiple batches? Theere has only been one batch so far from what we have seen. I've been anxiously awaiting another batch of ED good news. Has anyone received ED deferrals?

I guess maybe because in other cycles there hasn't been a week (this early in December) where no one has heard anything? No one's even come out of the woodwork to say anything. But eh, I'm sort of happy that no one's heard anything...it's better than some of us getting deferred/denied

Personally, I've been waiting for my deferral since the start of the week. I'm starting to wonder what could've happened to it.

Why are you expecting a deferral? Based on the ED acceptances thus far, I'd say you've got strong numbers. I, on the other hand, am getting concerned. This cycle seems to be placing more weight on GPA. The last I've heard from CLS was acknowledgment last week of an update I submitted during the first week of December... I'm not expecting a decision from them until the end of the month.

I was expecting a deferral because I thought that there couldn't be many seats left after the wave of acceptances. I figured that, given that I was one of the leftovers, it was likely that I was going to be deferred. Now that the usual deferral-week has passed, I don't know what to think.

shakespeare wrote:Hi guys, I need some advice.

I will be out of the country beginning from late January on (likely until June). I will have mail forwarded to me from my permanent address in the states by my family.

But if there are all these calls I could (hopefully) be expecting in late January, should I notify the schools I have not heard back from and give them my international phone number? Otherwise, the current U.S. number I'm using will be shut off. I expect an email will eventually come, in the (hopeful) case(s) of acceptance. But what if some schools (ex. Harvard) only call (rather than also email) to notify me of a phone/skype interview? Or if they have to resort to email, might they not wait for me or just figure they can't reach me?

Any ideas would be appreciated!

harvard has been emailing some applicants in the other thread who are abroad when they've been accepted (instead of calling). don't worry! if you got in, i am sure they will not retract if you are a little harder to reach.

ETA interview invites are by email

the graph indicates that the third week of december was when the deferrals came out last year... isnt this week the third week of december?

Well, last year the big deferral day was Thursday December 15th, which was in the second (full) week of December. In 2010, it was Thursday December 16th, which was again the Thursday of the second full week. In 2009, it was December 13th-14th, a Sunday and Monday. Last week I had it in my head that Thursday the 13th was the day, but nothing happened.

Perhaps tomorrow? Deferring everyone on Thursday the 20th—right before the Christmas weekend and ~5 days after the decisions usually come out—seems cruel.

So I presume then that Columbia hasn't even begun to issue Regular Decisions acceptances/rejections yet? I've already heard from several schools that I applied to after Columbia, should I be worried (I applied RD).

I'm surprised they haven't released any more too, but if I recall, a couple people found out on the 28th/29th last year, with another right before Christmas. They're likely not done yet!

When you say more weight on GPA, do you mean just for Columbia, or overall? I have definitely not found that to be true so far for me. I've been accepted already to several schools where my GPA is below median, and I assume its since my LSAT is pretty good; with the general decline in applicants and test-takers, I read that more emphasis would be placed on LSAT since schools want to maintain their previous year medians to prop up rankings, and this has borne out so far in my experience. Thoughts?

I really hope you are right. Unfortunately, the schools I love (B, LA, SC) tend to favor higher GPAs.

Now that I think about it what I said might be based more on a hunch than on any hard facts - I'm insecure about my 3.35/173, so when I look at the acceptances thus far, the only number I end up seeing is a GPA higher than mine :/ I sure hope kappycaft1 is right, though. Splitters need loving too!

They won't start accepting RD until mid to late January, if they follow past cycles. Don't worry, enjoy the holidays before you start mentally preparing yourself for the decision.

I think we've survived another day of waiting for nothing... Let's start betting on when the next ED responses will be released.
