Re: Columbia c/o 2016 Applicants (2012-2013)
NYU is showing me all sorts of love and Columbia has some weird "we just don't contact applicants and we're too cool for status checker" thing going on. If I'm fortunate enough to get into both I think the much more pleasant NYU applicant experience might sway me.
Come on Columbia, send me an email or -something-!

The application is due on Friday, and I'm having trouble getting my parents' tax-returns. Should I be stressing over this?
Interested in this as well. I probably won't qualify purely on the basis of need due to parents income so I wonder if its even worth the trouble.

Odd theory I'm developing, anyone held/reserved yesterday from the tri-state area?

I have a looming suspicion that there is a bloodbath of rejections coming in the mail. But there could also be a wave of admits coming, but i'm wondering if they will do that next week (post March 1 finaid deadline)

Re: Columbia c/o 2016 Applicants (2012-2013)
I'm wondering if some of the incredibly high numbers we see placed on hold/reserve are a function of Columbia reacting to the job market. If Columbia places best into NY biglaw, maybe between two equal candidates, they will look for students who show a higher likelihood of going into that market? Not having to deal with students who are unemployed because they want Texas biglaw, etc....

My numbers are low so I don't fit that theory. I (probably wrongly) believe that my CU ties are the sole reason I haven't been rejected already.bob loblaw11 wrote:I'm wondering if some of the incredibly high numbers we see placed on hold/reserve are a function of Columbia reacting to the job market. Interesting theory bob --honestly, it's hard to come up with any rhyme or reason to these holds, especially since some of them have already had JS1s at Harvard (not that that means a whole lot for Columbia, but shows that they're very strong candidates). It seems inevitable that many of you will be admitted, so I just don't get why CLS is putting it off.

I don't get why they even tell people they're being held.

I think it's probably better than going months and months without a peep (like what's happening to some folks over in the NYU and Stanford threads). As someone observed earlier, it's a natural point at which to send a LOCI, resume update, grades update, etc. So, I choose to view it like a UVA YP waitlist -- a good time to show them what a good fit you are for their school.fallingup wrote:I don't get why they even tell people they're being held.
Also, I'm in the tri-state area but don't want to do NY big law, so take that fwiw, bob.

They also want a diverse class, they certainly don't want all 365 students from the NYC area. They love their pie charts that show how diverse their students' backgrounds are.bluecouch wrote:I think it's probably better than going months and months without a peep (like what's happening to some folks over in the NYU and Stanford threads). I agree, i had two law schools tell me they wanted someone with my background, midwest, small town, to have some geographic diversity. I was accepted by both schools.HawkeyeGirl wrote:They also want a diverse class, they certainly don't want all 365 students from the NYC area. Had nothing to do with your gpa/LSAT combo and their medians?uconjak wrote:I agree, i had two law schools tell me they wanted someone with my background, midwest, small town, to have some geographic diversity. Oh man, if I get rejected from Columbia partly because I moved from GA to CT in November, I am going to be sad. Although I wonder what they count as your hometown... I've moved a ridiculous number of times since undergrad (10 years ago).uconjak wrote:I agree, i had two law schools tell me they wanted someone with my background, midwest, small town, to have some geographic diversity. For all the people who are just absolutely shocked by being held/dinged: schools deny people above their medians all the time. It isn't unusual. More than likely, it means you are not the kind of person they are looking for, at least in a "first round" pick. Go outside.

So above median people, instead of saying shit how could this happen, you're supposed to put emotions to the side and rationally say "well, it wasnt my numbers, they just dont like me, the person." and then try not to /self

Because applications map on very well to who you are personally.grapefruits wrote:For all the people who are just absolutely shocked by being held/dinged: schools deny people above their medians all the time. Sorry if this has been asked before, but regarding financial aid, Columbia's website says that the deadline for FAFSA, need access, tax forms and a Columbia-specific questionnaire are due on March 1st. If we aren't going to know whether we will be accepted or not before this date, does the deadline still apply or should we wait until after we know before sending anything to them?

Re: Columbia c/o 2016 Applicants (2012-2013)
I'm pretty sure that they say on the website that they'll give you certain amount of time after admission to do all the finaid stuff. And it explicitly tells applicants who have yet to be accepted NOT to send them anything. I can find the link for you later when I have time. But it's probably a few clicks away if you look closer.nerv wrote:Sorry if this has been asked before, but regarding financial aid, Columbia's website says that the deadline for FAFSA, need access, tax forms and a Columbia-specific questionnaire are due on March 1st.
