Samesies

Also "samesies", and I applied the first minute possible.

Yeah they're making a super great impression.

Also, do Columbia and NYU law have any recreational or educational activities that include students from both schools? It would be fun to have a sports rivalry or something of that nature.

Well I don't (and never have) lived in NYC but my sister just started at NYU for her undergrad a month ago and she loves it! It sounds like the only reason she's coming home for the holidays is for the food and I wouldn't be surprised if she found some way to stay up there for the summer too. I also have a bunch of friends who live there (some grew up there, some have moved there since college) and everyone seems to love it.

My friends (all post-college transplants, for the most part) are split. Half love living in NYC, half think it's a soul-sucking cesspool and are plotting their escapes.

Eye of the beholder indeed.

I visited the Columbia Law building (not an official visit, just walked around). It's beautiful, everything looks really new, there's an awesome "student lounge" with comfortable looking chairs and super-soundproof windows. The way CLS is connected to SIPA and the main campus by rooftops is clever as hell and beautiful.

I will say, though, that you never get the sense that you're out of the city. The building, even though it's pretty big, definitely feels like a confined space. I'm sure that's a selling point for a lot of people -- there's no doubt you're in New York. But others might be turned off by having to study in such a dense and busy place.

Just my thoughts anyway...

What are my chances with a 3.98 171? I go to a top 25 university, have had 2 jobs on campus during my undergrad, have had an internship at a law firm during one summer, and have been on a dance team for 4 years here at college.

They're pretty good. You'd be a lock if your LSAT wasn't below median.

I think you have a 2/3 chance of getting in, maybe a bit higher

I made an account on "My Columbia Law" and I go back to my email and see:

"Welcome to Columbia Law"

My heart stops - I was admitted already via email?!

Oh... it actually read:

"Welcome to My Columbia Law"

Fail. :|

C&F Question #3 asks:

"Have you ever, either as an adult or a juvenile, been cited, arrested, charged with, indicted, convicted or tried for, or pleaded guilty to, the commission of any felony or misdemeanor or the violation of any law, except minor parking violations, or been the subject of any juvenile delinquency or youthful offender proceeding?"

Are "minor parking violations" synonymous with "minor traffic violations"? I've had a few of the latter in high school and early on in college. This would be the only school I'm applying to that asks to disclose traffic/moving violations....

How is anyone else treating this?

They say pretty explicitly to err on the side of full/over disclosure, and the risks of not doing it correctly (not being admitted to the bar) seem too steep to chance it. I would just disclose any minor traffic violations. Plus I have a hard time believing they'll dock anyone for a simple traffic ticket - it's most likely just a formality and when they see you ran a redlight 3 years ago they won't care. It doesn't effect your ability to practice law or contribute to their program, and it doesn't show you make bad decisions unless you have a reckless pattern. I wouldn't sweat it.

Anyone know how the Dean's letter thing works?

I was written up a couple times for drinking while living in the dorms a few years ago. I called my schools Office of Judicial Affairs, who looked up my disciplinary record and told me that it was completely clean. Student housing services at my UG only reports violations of the student conduct code, which mine apparently were not. As a result, the Office of judicial affairs at my school has nothing to "explain" in a deans letter, since they were never made aware of any incidents.

To cover my ass just in case, I plan on fully disclosing this to CLS, even though no record exists and my UG confirmed that they would certify me as "clean."

Has anyone else already gone through this process? The lady in charge of this at my UG wants me to give her the appropriate form to fill out, but I can't seem to find it and Columbia's website isn't very helpful.

Any help/input?

I PM'd you. I corresponded with Columbia a bit about the dean's letter so if anyone has questions feel free to PM me.
