balls to the wall. I like it. Interested to see what they do (if anything). Have they always required this?

Seems like it. Quotes from last year's thread:
Moomoo2u wrote:
freestallion wrote:I have a question about the LORs. I saw the following in the CLS instructions:
Columbia requires two letters of recommendation. For applicants currently matriculated in or recently graduated from a degree program, we prefer that both letters of recommendation be submitted by faculty. For applicants currently working on a full-time basis, a letter from an employer or immediate supervisor who most recently supervised your full-time work is required and may replace one of the two faculty letters. In some instances, applicants may find it extremely difficult to obtain one of the required appraisals. If that is the case, applicants must use their best judgment to determine what letters should be submitted to complete their file, with the understanding of how valuable letters of recommendation are to our evaluation of their qualifications for admission.
See bolded - They require one from an employer? I haven't asked my employer because I've been working in a more admin type job and I don't think they'd comment as well as some of my other recommenders on my qualities, etc. I don't know what to do now... Do you think it'll hurt me if I don't submit one from my current employer?

Not unless you've been out of school for a long time, "In some instances, applicants may find it extremely difficult to obtain one of the required appraisals. If that is the case, applicants must use their best judgment to determine what letters should be submitted to complete their file, with the understanding of how valuable letters of recommendation are to our evaluation of their qualifications for admission."

I take that to mean that if you can't get one of the required ones then they aren't going to hold it against you, but that they would look favorably upon letters of recommendation from those sources.
freestallion wrote:
Tiago Splitter wrote:Getting an academic rec is impossible for me. We both just have to use our best judgement like the school says.
Thanks. It would take too long to get an additional rec at this point so I'll take my chances and submit with the reccs I already have collected.

I think it's the "required" language that threw me off. Most schools seem to write that 2 reccs are required and certain types are "preferred." So I didn't expect this from CLS.
And yes, freestallion and Tiago were both accepted in the first RD batch--no problems detected.

I hope that relieves anyone panicking about getting dinged for this.

For what it's worth, I went to an information session led by the director of admissions and he was pretty clear that they preferred academic LORs unless you'd been out so long that getting one would be really difficult. I wouldn't sweat it.

Think ED'll hear back tomorrow? Would they all be released tomorrow if yes, or do acceptances come back over a period of a week or two starting tomorrow give or take a couple days?

Just running off LSN, it seems like the first Monday in December is far and away the most popular day for acceptances. But decisions, good and bad, come out throughout the month. Including Christmas Eve and New Year's.

Gotcha.

Yeah, you're absolutely spot-on. I ended up going through the whole of last year's thread through January, and ED decisions came out as late as 12/29.

A chunk came out 12/5, then at least as far as TLS goes, not 'til 6-7 days later for the next small group... then one 12/23, and a couple at the end of the month. Yikes.

Hope you guys are all doing well, and with a little luck I'll see some of you next fall.

Just like Nov 27th and Nov 29th were too? If you say this every day you'll be right eventually

That's tight, I had no idea. Another definition:
"out of its proper or chronological order, especially a person or practice that belongs to an earlier time"

On a related note, a "geek" can also mean someone who bites off chicken heads for entertainment, often found in circuses...

Haha thank you so much! No hat to hold onto, yes, but I did clutch my head as part of the initial reaction. Same deal, right?

I did ED, yes, and the decision came as a .pdf letter attached to an email!
