I was a member of the slightly lighter blue cohort down the road, so call me biased, but my roommate/best friend graduated from Duke Law and that's the general feeling that I got. Duke isn't very many people's first choice, and you can feel it.

Not the sense I get at all. But maybe.

I think it is more of a Southern thing. When I tell lawyers who live in the South that I got in they almost universally tell me to go to Duke, even over their own top 20 and sometimes T14 alma maters.

Might be a function of their relatively late notice and this people not updating. Also nobody likes Duke or attends so maybe they don't bother updating :)

Supposedly they are one of if not the most generous t14s as far as percentage of the class that gets aid.

I've definitely noticed Duke isn't well represented or regarded on this site. I'm not really sure. Seems like a pretty great school the more I look at it and pretty competitive with top schools in terms of employment prospects. Maybe it's the Southern thing?

It's something I never understood either. It ranked eighth last year in NLJ 250 placement and also has one of the highest placement percentages for federal clerkships outside of YHS. Pretty sure location has a lot to do with it.

Durham sounds nice to me. It's not Ithaca.

Also Duke is quite splitter unfriendly and on a splitter friendly site that's not a great thing for one's reputation.

I really think it's just a weird TLS thing. Duke has great employment prospects and most people that I have talked to that actually went to Duke Law loved it. On TLS you have a lot of people who haven't had the ability to form an opinion about a school by actually visiting or attending, so you get a lot of people repeating/amplifying an attitude that started for who knows what reason.

The scope of this statement is not supported.

I know people that love Duke. I know people who hate NYU.

People are people.

Brian Leiter, for whoever cares, certainly didn't think much of the school until very recently, particularly the faculty, whom he used to consider some of the weakest in the T14 [citation omitted due to laziness]. IIRC he ranked Duke below UCLA/UTA/USC/Vandy in a lot of major categories, which seems to match up with TLS sentiment. I also get the impression that Duke has been working quite hard to improve that image in the past decade, at least based on Leiter's compliments across his blog. Statistically speaking they seem to be in great shape as far as placement is concerned.

Think someone somewhere said Princeton review gave the faculty at Duke the highest ranking of all law schools. I'm not going to look it up because its not a big deal to me but if true it shows how little those types of rankings matter. I just want a job yo. And to pay off BIG DEBT.

If I manage to hit four months of "File Under Review," I might call them and ask to check their trash can to make sure they didn't just throw my app out and forget to let me know.

Duke is in a post-Chemerinsky state. Good faculty tend to follow wherever he has been.

Yeah, again, my impression is that Duke has really turned things around over recent decades. And qualitative ranking systems are likely to have wildly divergent outcomes from one another anyway; I don't think Leiter's opinions have ever very closely mirrored USNWR/Princeton's on a micro scale. He certainly thinks a hell of a lot more highly about UTA than others, for instance, which I'm sure has nothing to do with his former tenure there.

I imagine the personal statement I poured countless hours into covered in a sad mess of coffee grounds and BBQ sauce covered pulled pork sandwich wrappers. FML

Got my offer in the mail-$67500. Definitely excited about it. Although its kind of right in that range that might make it tough for me to choose it over the money I have at slightly lower ranked schools. Definitely a good problem to have though.

Heh Princeton Review is utter nonsense but it's probably not much worse than Leiter's egregious pro-UT/pro-UChicago trolling.

Thanks guys. Mailed date was 2/19, I'm guessing everyone in the first batch was mailed that day. If you don't get it today I bet you get it tomorrow.

Congrats on the money BigZuck!

Maybe when they are sending out everyone's scholarships they will knock the trash-can over that contains my moldy application and then remember me.
