I don't think this is enough to steer me away from Cornell's offer. I may try to negotiate but even if they bumped it up to $75K, I think it would still be a difficult choice.

NoodleyOne wrote:Legit review. I'm wondering if it's because I couldn't get my father's info for Need Access (never met the man and would have no idea in how to get in touch with him).

I'm pretty sure this has to be the reason, Noodley. Did you ever contact NYU about their policy of needing both parents' info?

Congrats to the new admits and to the people excited about their scholarship offers!

I did, they said they would perhaps get in touch with me and require a written statement from a third party confirming, but that was before I submitted, and since then radio silence. I went ahead and sent in an e-mail today and asked if they needed anything from me... hopefully that will get the ball moving.

Random 3L here; for those of you who did apply to AnBryce and get a finalist interview. They give you a list of current AB-ers to call up to chat with. The process can be intimidating, especially for those who interview in DC.

Call the students; we want to talk to you. :)

Also, I'm guessing you guys have about one to two weeks before hearing back. Wish I had better news. :?

Got the same $62.5k award. Not too exciting but certainly better than nothing.

Yeah, it seems odd that they'd just leave you with a "maybe we'll contact you" given the strong language on the site:
If you believe your family situation warrants an exemption for one or both parents, you may submit a formal written appeal to our office setting forth the basis of the request. You must provide detailed information and, whenever possible, documentation in support of the appeal (e.g., court documents, letters from social worker, member of the clergy).

Sounds like they would absolutely have to have something more official before they can offer you anything, but then why leave you hanging and not contact you? Strange.

Oh I agree. It's a nice offer and I would definitely be fine with $62.5K if I had no better offers. I just don't think I would take it over my other options.

I still plan on attending the Thursday portion of the March ASW though, just to be sure.

i think NYU might be doing a weird combined version of need/merit for their scholarship offers. that's what it feels like, at least.

Except I won't be completely debt-free  But thanks. I'm kind of glad this seems to be an easy decision at the moment.

Yeah, maybe it has to do with the fact that I was honest about how much cash I have saved up. I mean, it's only enough to make a small dent, but they may have adjusted mine downward because of it.

I have zero in savings and a hilariously small amount in my checking account, and my current job is giving me pennies. they might have thrown some more my way because of my financial situation. all speculation though.

Ah I would be so happy with $67,500. I'd go to NYU hands down with that sum. they gave me $15K/yr which I was still excited about. I was honest about my savings too, but considering its less than the CoL of one year, I'd say it probably didn't factor in much. My car which I had to list on Need Access might have hurt me tho ;/ its by far my largest asset.

You can get aid without submitting need access; just email and say you want merit aid only. I'm sort of glad I went this route, because it apparently hurts to disclose savings.

Sure. But I can't stay out late since I have to get up at 4am to drive to Ithaca :| Really wishing these two didn't conflict.

A meet up before the events would actually be better for me.

+1 on savings hurting your scholarship amount. I'm not trying to brag or anything, but I thought the 50K NYU gave me was a little bit disappointing considering my numbers. I think the amount of savings I disclosed probably hurt more than I thought it would. The need-based system seems to punish you for being a financially responsible adult. If you have worked for years and saved penny by penny, you get no rewards. If you've lived a luxury life and squandered all your savings, you'll get rewarded handsomely by the "need-based" system.

Sorry that I sound so bitter. After studying Harvard's need-based grant system, I was really kicking myself for living such a frugal life.

+1 but for undergrad lol this is how my parents felt paying $200,000 while my wealthier friends got generous financial aid.

You have a right to be bitter, but I wouldn't characterize those with no savings as "living a life of luxury and squandering all savings". Every spare penny I have goes toward student loans. Hardly a luxury.

Sorry. It was a hypothetical situation. I was trying to say that if I had spent it all, I might get better awards.

In no way was I trying to insinuate anything else. Now that I read it again, it sounds horrible.

No worries, I know what you mean. Sometimes I sound the same way when I complain that my parents make so much money that I'm not eligible for need aid... and then I want to punch myself.

I frequently get pretty worked up when I think about the fact that my dad's salary might hurt my chances at getting scholarship aid when he is contributing a big ol' goose egg to my education. It happens to all of us, don't beat yourself up!

My EFC is 0, savings is essentially non-existent and I have 25k+ UG debt.

I got 90k (75k) which seems to be slightly more than some with similar numbers so it may have some effect.

Completely forgot about that number. Now that I think about it, it's almost the same as the "Assumed Annual Student Contribution" listed in my scholarship notice.

Oh, Useless! I will cross my fingers and toes. NYU should be happy to have people like you.
