UR 11/21, probably should get a decision this week...? Does the admissions dept. stay open during Berk's spring break?

I'm guessing they can't rank their waitlist until they've rendered decisions for all other applicants...?bsinoff wrote:Is it not late March yet!?

Has anyone heard back about scholarship money yet? Someone on another thread mentioned that they called admissions and they said they would start rolling out scholly decisions this week but it doesn't seem like anyone on TLS has heard. Berkeley is absolutely my #1 (barring a hail mary acceptance from Stanford) but it would be financial suicide for me to go without a substantial scholarship...

On LSN, two people from this cycle have put scholarship money for berkeley.
Other than that I don't think I've seen anyone report anything.

What is FR? I was under full committee review for a while, like two weeks before I got a call from dean Tom

Faculty Review. You are the first that I've seen in awhile get an acceptance w/o getting sent a FR email, so I was curious.t0wlie wrote:What is FR? I was under full committee review for a while, like two weeks before I got a call from dean Tom

Does anyone have a sense whether Berkeley is more likely to match a scholarship from Michigan over Duke? I am ready to submit my Michigan offer but noticed that my Duke letter was mailed today. Trying to weigh whether it is worth it to wait to submit (since I suspect Duke might offer me more), or if getting it in to Berkeley a few days to a week earlier is worth it, especially if they view Michigan as more of a peer school than Duke, and are thus more likely to match...Thoughts? Thanks.

I struggled with this too. My advice would be, present yourself honestly about which school you would actually go to, Duke or Michigan, if not Berkeley, and then have a reason why. It's not just based on USNWR ranking or $ amount, although that is relevant and it gives Michigan a boost in my opinion since they are tied with Cal. Additionally, Michigan is a large public with more general similarities to Berkeley than duke. If, however, you would clearly rather practice in the south or you have a southern connection, duke seems like a more likely candidate and that will factor positively for youtestaker wrote:Does anyone have a sense whether Berkeley is more likely to match a scholarship from Michigan over Duke? 4th quartile represent! I'll just take this as my rejection letter. Good luck to everyone who is higher on the list than I am.

I'm 2nd quartile AND out of state. Does any one know if they're doing two waitlists again this year? The email said 360 people were on the wait list, so 90-180 people ahead of me PLUS the in-state-ers...Ding ding ding

Re: Berkeley c/o 2016 Applicants (2012-2013 cycle)
I looked at the old thread, and it looked like they had 2 waitlists last year. The in-state waitlist got all the way down to 3rd or 4th, but I don't think they even touched the out of state. There was at least one person who was in the 1st quartile out of state who never got in

That's reassuring (since I'm in the third quartile) but I find that hard to believe that they would take that many people off the wait list.WhatOurBodiesAreFor wrote:didn't they take off the 3rd quartile last year?

Has anyone spoken to a Berk representative about the multiple WL thing? I just tried to call but I didn't get out of work until too late.
I was feeling pretty good with a 1st quartile WL but now not so much. I would love more info though

Does berkeley match scholly for those waitlisted and then later accepted?

I like the way you think, but something tells me they will be pretty short on scholarship money and probably won't dole it out too readily.
However, I assume each admit off the W-L count towards Berkley's overall number of admits (for yield statistics) and would also assume they want to minimize the number of people who they ask for YP. Is it wishful thinking to hope they have a little bank of scholarship money they saved to bust out in the heart of the summer?!

1st Q. Out of state. Kinda tough to know where I stand when there could be 89 people ahead of me.TripTrip wrote:2nd Q here.

Re: Berkeley c/o 2016 Applicants (2012-2013 cycle)
I actually heard back from Berkeley regarding the matching scholarship program. The amount I was awarded by Berkeley (75K) exceeded the scholarship that I submitted (though not by much, less than a 10k difference). Nevertheless, the award is definitely making it a top contender for me. When I submitted my request, I could have picked other schools that had given me larger awards, but I actually picked the school that I likely would have attended, which in terms of scholly money was somewhere in the middle. I also think that my personal info (UG school/residency) backed up my claim that this school would be a top contender for me. Not to say you need "proof", but in my case I think it helped.
When I wrote the supplemental essay I never mentioned the school offering the scholly money. I kept it totally focused on Berkeley and why I wanted to attend.
As for how they decide which applications to approve, who knows?
I'd rather not share too much info in the thread, but if you have more specific questions, feel free to pm me. Promise I'll respond.

Re: Berkeley c/o 2016 Applicants (2012-2013 cycle)
I got through to Berkeley admissions today. They said there is only one waitlist this year.
Could someone explain the in-state "waitlist" thing to me in detail (or why they think in-state'ers have a better chance)? Or is the in-state waitlist possibility now dispelled by what they told me?
