So so far Duke, Gtown, and Cornell have started telling people decisions. Any predictions on which will be the next to give us decisions?

Also, I think Duke has only told priority track people so far. So they will probably also start sending decisions to regular applicants soon.

Sandy just shut down the entire east coast. My money is now on Michigan.

I think as long as you send it before mid-november, it won't hurt your chances. Good luck.

I do feel like I am capable of higher score, but I'd have to wait until after December scores come back. I know Berkeley encourages applications to be submitted as early as possible. With that in mind, should I apply now or apply after I retake?

Definite retake situation. Don't waste the GPA

I can only tell you what I would do, as the decision to apply or wait is very personal and has to be your own. Having said that, I will tell you that I've listened to Dean Tom give two presentations and I have spoken on a very personal level with someone that used to sit on the committee. Here are a few points to consider:

1) Berkeley admissions has stated repeatedly that they focus on a holistic approach and give substantial weight to a personal statement and soft factors. Most schools state something to this effect, but in the case of Berkeley I believe this is more true than elsewhere. If you look at lsn and the admissions predictors, you will notice that there is a larger range of LSAT and GPA's then others in the top 10. Furthermore, for any combo of numbers entered, there is a larger percentage of the previous year's admitted class that falls below that number than other schools in the top 10. In Dean Tom's own words, he "seeks to admit 240 unique and individual voices" and indicates that each application is read individually, regardless of numbers.

2) Berkeley has historically been reputed to give substantial weight to GPA. This may be merely folklore, but when combined with the evidence presented in (1) it may be sound.

3) A 167 is not a bad score, especially when combined with a 3.9. Your lsat is at the median for the last admitted class and your GPA is just below the 75th percentile of 3.91. This is nothing to scoff at.

4) Berkeley and Dean Tom have emphasized over and over the importance of getting your app in early (before Thanksgiving, at the latest), as the number of apps spikes just before the holidays and into the new year, and admissions offers are continually being made (thereby reducing the spots available).

5) Denials don't usually come out until late in the cycle. While admits are being handed out early for stellar applicants, waitlist decisions don't typically come until a little later, and rejections towards the end, especially for individuals with numbers as strong as yours. I am least confident about this statement of any of the points I've laid out so far, but this does appear to be the trend. You may want to research this further.

All things considered, I'd submit my application now, take the December LSAT, and give them an update in early Jan. if you see an improvement (but I'd verify this is possible with admissions). Alternatively, if you are confident you can knock out a 175 or so in December it might be worth waiting, especially if you really feel something was "off" with you the day you took the test; however, if nothing felt particularly off on test day then a big jump at the high end of the lsat spectrum may be a tough feat. Do you need 8 points? Maybe not. But 3 points is the margin of error, so I'd want to be able to count on at least 171. You may also want to consider the practice tests that you used as a basis for your expectation of a higher score. Did you consistently score well above 167 (meaning, say, on at least 3 or more tests)? Some tests were comparatively easy with very lenient curves, while others have hit the test takers hard on both counts. What you really need to ask yourself is whether the 167 is truly not representative of your ability to do well on the LSAT.

Take this fwiw. If it's worth nothing, then disregard it in entirety. My main point here is we all seem to think we need to be 75th+ percentile in both GPA and LSAT to get, and it simply isn't the truth. Will it help? Sure. However, according to Dean Tom the lowest LSAT admitted last cycle was a 152 and the lowest GPA was in the neighborhood of a 3.3. He did note that these were not the same person, but you are way ahead on both.

In the end, only 8-10% of applicants are getting regardless of their scores. There may actually be an "auto-admit" range, but if you're not in it already you may want to try to figure out how much higher it is and if you can hit it, and if the gain outweighs the risk of waiting. Personally, I don't know what your worried about; then again, you could have been testing at 178, for all I know.

Good luck.

Sent in yesterday. Under Review today. Not expecting to get in, since my numbers aren't what they desire, but it is my dream school so I had to try.

SoJerz13, How did you find out your Under Review status? I sent mine in yesterday too. Did you get a login ID and password from BerkLaw? Thanks.
