Re: Berkeley c/o 2016 Applicants (2012-2013 cycle)
If any current students read this thread, I'm looking for opinions on lodging options for ASW. I currently have a room reserved at Hotel Durant, which I originally picked for its proximity to campus. But I'm reconsidering and may switch to Hotel Shattuck Plaza, which I know is about a 15-20 minute walk to the law school.
The reason for this is three-fold: a) significant other is traveling with me and commuting to his company's SF office Friday morning, so Shattuck Plaza being directly across the street from BART is appealing b) felt like it may actually be a boon to stay in downtown Berkeley so as to see more of the vibe of the city. Durant seems to be in a pretty residential neighborhood, which might not necessarily give the full flavor of the area. From what I could tell from the Google Doc of students willing to host prospectives this weekend, it looks like Berkeley students live pretty spread out across the area, so thought staying at Shattuck might put us in a location more ideal for exploring different areas and seeing the fuller picture. c) Shattuck Plaza looks nicer for minimal price difference, and has AC.
Concern is: will it be burdensome for me to make the trek to campus for the ASW programming?
Thoughts/opinions appreciated, thanks!

Not a current student but I know the area. Your post pretty much answered your questions for you, I think. Go with the Shattuck, assuming it's comparable price and quality wise (I'm not familiar with either hotel). It's really just a question of who is walking 15 minutes to get where they're going -- you or your significant other. The walk from the Downtown Berkeley station to the law school is an easy one (I made it recently, with my parents, in well under 20 minutes) and will allow you a chance to see a good deal of the campus on your way, while having your hotel in an area where you could easily grab a bite or a drink very nearby when you're not at ASW.testaker wrote:If any current students read this thread, I'm looking for opinions on lodging options for ASW. Got the email to check out MyFinAid. No new details or terms of the grant though.

Anyone else send Berkeley match form with only a week to respond? What's the likelihood that they'll get back to me in time?

Same here. Wonder when they're going to get back regarding the matching request.venus wrote:Got the email to check out MyFinAid. No new details or terms of the grant though.

Yea thats what I did. Got other offer extended 1 week, but I still want Cal to respond ASAP. I emailed them the other day reminding them that the deadline was approaching for matching but no response so far.ssanonymous wrote:oof. Its possible they will get back to you in time but ive heard when they make quick judgements like that its often right down to the wire (like night before) and less favorable. Extension of the other offer is the way to go

Re: Berkeley c/o 2016 Applicants (2012-2013 cycle)
So are we all going to hear back next week about matching scholarships? Like right before ASW? I could've sworn someone said they called the office and said all matching scholarship decisions had been made.
I'm dying here. I say a prayer every night for some Berkeley $$$. I wish I were kidding.

idk if this is a stupid question or not but i'm really lagging on doing my taxes so i haven't resubmitted/updated FAFSA info yet and when i accessed UCB FinAid website, it says i have about 20K in gift aid. do you guys know if this is just estimated or if it's confirmed? and is it subject to change once i update my information? thanks

Re: Berkeley c/o 2016 Applicants (2012-2013 cycle)
Not a chance. They keep sending out matching offers until June, Check last years thread. Most people didn't seem to hear back until late April. If everything was decided by 4/4, we'd know a lot earlier than that. Also, there are many people who have yet to submit/yet to actually receive competing scholarships.twinkletoes16 wrote:So are we all going to hear back next week about matching scholarships? So if I submitted a matching scholarship for UVA whose offer expires today, should I let Berkeley know that I got an extension on UVA's offer so that they can't be like "mwahaha, you get nothing bc we took forever with this decision so that you can no longer be eligible for UVA"?

Emailed cal again pleading to give me a matching decision. I think they just don't care anymore.

Submitted my matching scholarship form last night and then got waitlisted at Harvard today. Now I don't know what I'll do if Berkeley comes through with the matching offer because it seems like that means I'd have to withdraw all other apps ASAP if accepting their offer and committing. :-/ Looks like it may be UVA after all.

No. You only need to withdraw at schools you've been accepted to. Waitlisted or pending applications can remain.

Isn't there some stipulation they have about after June 1st? I don't remember the details, but I think it impacted a lot of people on waitlists last year who deposited at Berkeley.djwjddl wrote:kfischm1 wrote:Submitted my matching scholarship form last night and then got waitlisted at Harvard today. If my Gift Aid (based on need, etc) was about the same as the Match from another school, does it mean that the matching scholarship won't be happening?

Re: Berkeley c/o 2016 Applicants (2012-2013 cycle)
no, not necessarily. gift aid at this point only includes need-based grants. you may receive matching later and financial aid could adjust your need-based grant afterwards.

Right, so my bottom line would still be the same, right? I am not going to end up with significantly more?djwjddl wrote:no, not necessarily. gift aid at this point only includes need-based grants. you may receive matching later and financial aid could adjust your need-based grant afterwards.

Can we get some talk about ASW going? Berkeley threads seem the deadest here. I'm getting really psyched- have a student host, a day in SF planned, students that have emailed me to talk to them later...woo!
Have been also looking at CL which I probably shouldn't be doing and finding cheap studios. I WANT.

i'll be there! flying in friday morning, will BART my way over to the campus. probs staying with high school friends who go to Cal tho. I'm excited! although how are you dealing with the april 12th NU deadline? I'm very conflicted & it will pass while we are at ASW..twinkletoes16 wrote:Can we get some talk about ASW going?
