This a ridiculous (and probably presumptuous) question, but for those of you who've been admitted via phone call: was it during regular business hours? My office doesn't know I'm applying to law school--and their finding out would be a headache. Just wondering whether I should start wandering away from my cube when I get calls from unknown numbers.

Almost every law school that gives sudden acceptance calls will do it during working hours because that is when they are working too. Calling you to tell you you're in is their job, not their after-work hobby.

Well if you work in the east, then you may be out of work when you get the call given the 3 hour time difference.

Of course. They are calling during their working hours (Pacific time), so you might get a call as late as 8:00am or 9:00pm (I think some people were saying they've received them this late) if you are are on the East Coast. I am still hoping to hear something from Berkeley, but when I got the call from UCLA it was around 3:00pm in the afternoon, and I live on the East Coast, so you should be prepared to pick up that phone whenever & wherever you are.

In the office? Phone. At the gym? Phone. Showering? Phone (in OtterBox case).

Hmmm, I don't know if that's true. My friend got accepted to Yale after business hours, and we assumed it was because his app said he had a full time job.

Yeah but if everyone below 167 is URM or has great softs that doesn't do a whole lot for the majority of applicants, especially the K-JD "OMGZ I been under review for 2 weeks WHERE BE MY ACceptaNce!!!" crowd. 167/3.75 ain't gonna cut it at Cal if that's all you've got. Most of the time it will cut it at Cornell. That was my whole point.

Case in point: according to mylsn.info I have a 93% chance at Cornell but only a 27% chance at Berkeley. I am at or above medians at both schools.

Haha yeah I got your point, I'm just saying... I was particularly vouching for reverse splitters, because as of January 20th this year, the 75th percentile of those who had been denied by Berkeley for the 2011-2012 cycle was 3.65 (the 75th for admits was 3.91) according to LSN. Also, the 25/50/75th percentile LSAT scores for admits and denies were:

Admits (25/50/75):
170 / 173 / 175

Denies (25/50/75):
162 / 166 / 168

We still have over a month to go before January 20, 2013, but as things sit now, the median LSAT is 2 points lower (171 vs 173) right now than it was then. This might be a good sign for those with high GPAs and low LSAT scores, because people with high scores tend to apply earlier in the cycle.

But is the sample size enough to tell us anything? You're looking at admits who use LSN, who were admitted in a rather narrow time frame, from only two cycles. And there is only a difference of 2 LSAT points. Don't know how much you can read into that. Then again I don't know statistics or math so I probably don't know what I'm talking about.

Also what is the significance of January 20th? Was that the day of reckoning last year? I seem to remember February or March to be quite bloody.

You had to pick the one anomaly, didn't you.

Yale is the only top school that has to inform less than 300 people of their admittance. It is also one of the only - if not the only - school where the entire faculty decides on who to accept, and they have a much longer time-frame to review applicants' applications, so they also probably have a much better grasp on whether it would be better to call someone at night or not.

Yeah, I'm not expecting much better results with a 168/3.98. myLSN has almost nothing to go off of for those numbers anyways. In the vicinity of my #'s on their graph the chances range from 39% to 72% because there's so few apps.

However, unpredictability can be somewhat of a comfort at times.

I just don't get how Berkeley's turnaround is just SO much faster than any other school. It's not that they don't get a bunch of apps, and it's not like they only pick based on numbers. What's the deal?
