How to tell a school you're not going

Post by dingbat » Tue Feb 28, 2012 10:01 pm

Basically, how do I withdraw my application?
I got into a few schools that are now definately out of the running.

E-mail them, say thanks but I'm going in a different direction and wish to withdraw.

Be sure to say that you are "definately" withdrawing too. It'll be a nice touch.

Is it a bad practice to rub it in their faces when you withdraw?

Dear XYZ lower T1 school,

Thank you for offering me a 3/4 scholarship, but considering that a T30 school in your market has given me a 1/2 scholarship and the local T14 has said yes, there is no chance in hell I would consider going to your crapola shithole from which I doubt more than a handful of students stand a hairball's chance of gaining meaningful employment.
Peaceout and better luck with the next sucker

Not Yours,

Dingbat

I won't do this, but I am curious what the possible repercussions would be.

I would assume that they would withdraw your acceptance - which is kind of the point, innit?

They probably won't let you in their school.

I like the direction that questions about the application process are heading.

Probably nothing, but the world of LS Admissions is very small. In the investment banking world (also surprisingly small) the first thing you do if you get a hilarious email/resume/cover letter is 1. email it to all your buddies (name-blackout optional) 2. email it to dealbreaker. Google "Aleksey Vayner" if you don't believe me. I know Dean Johann from NU has posted some crazy quotes she has gotten on twitter (nameless of course), but it isn't inconceivable that they would forward crazy stuff to one another, including to a school you may actually consider attending.
