STCL c/o 2015

Post by austonian » Mon Jan 30, 2012 6:07 pm

How many of you are applying for fall admission? Has anyone visited? I attended the open house on the 21st. I didn’t feel like I was attending a sales pitch. The dean and the professors who spoke sparked my interest even more and I’m now eager to hear back from admissions.

It's on my list. I've heard some good things from my alumni network. I graduated from Houston, but I'm slightly below the median. How is the campus at STCL? The only thing that concerns me is that STCL is only a law school and doesn't have the resources that a full university does.

It’s really nice and in a good location. I agree with you about it being a stand-alone and inhibiting its alumni network. Hopefully being Houston’s oldest law school will help in that area.

I am also applying. Looks to be a very respected school for a TTTT.

I believe it is very reputable in the Houston market. I'm not sure how graduates do in other parts of Texas.

Well if I don't get into U of H, OU (both reach schools), or Texas Tech, then I feel STCL is the school for me. I also am hoping for some money. It's going to be between STCL and St. Mary's. The other Texas schools (TSU and Weslayan) are not AALS accredited so I didn't apply. TSU has an abysmal bar passage rate which is a big red flag for me. I am lucky that I live in a market where I would be fine from almost any Texas school (far south).

PS I also agree that it fairs well in the Houston market, especially if you can graduate at the top. I think the median salary is close to that of U of H.

I went to the info session and was impressed. Nice facilities, enthusiastic faculty, seemingly good reputation in Houston from what little I know. Seems like a great place to learn some good ole fashioned Texas lawyerin'. I think it would be a nice choice for certain people (maybe someone who got a full ride and wanted to work as a DA or Public Defender?). Given my own circumstance I don't think I will be attending if offered admission but I think it can be a great choice for the right person.

After submitting the application they respond in an email:

"The Admissions Committee pulls complete files randomly during the review process. You may expect a decision anytime between the end of February and through the end of April."

I know of last year some people not receiving any decisions well into the summer. I’m not sure if I should hold any merit to the admissions committee’s stated target deadline.

Is STCL doing an application status checker?

Wesleyan is now AALS. Wouldnt touch TSU though.

Oh, I didn't know that. I'm wondering if it's worth applying this cycle. I should be okay with the schools I've already applied to.

I want to attend this school. When do the acceptances start coming out?
Which would you say is better, STCL or St. Mary's?

Depends where you want to work. STCL is better if you want to be in Houston. STCL or St. Marys should actually only be even considered if you are okay working in their respective cities. You aren't going to be able to have a ton of flexibility coming out of either.

I got one the day I went complete I believe, which was the day after I sent in my application.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
