Rejected at Chapman with high GPA/LSAT? UPDATE

Post by leagle1 » Fri Dec 16, 2011 1:39 am

I applied to Chapman in November, I am above their 7th percentile in GPA, and WELL above in LSAT, and I just got a rejection notice by email, less than three weeks after applying. Not even waitlisted, rejected! First response I have received. Chapman was one school where I was certain I would be accepted. There was nothing usual in my app, so what gives? This is driving me nuts.

Am I the only one?

I don't know what to tell you. GPA above 7th percentile should have been a slam dunk.

Well if you were in the 7th percent and there was nothing usual in your app, that's probably why they rejected you.

In all seriousness though, it's most likely yield protection unless you made typos like the ones in your post on your personal statement. Even so... probably YP. Don't be too bummed.

it's still pretty surprising. Most YP victims are waitlisted and given the opportunity to show their interest

Heh, well technically I was above that as well. But there were no typos in my app, and yes I meant 75th.

That's what I thought, I would not have been surprised at all if I was waitlisted, but a flat out rejection after only a few weeks? It really has me wondering.

Most likely you were rejected because they decided they couldn't give you enough money to convince you to attend. Happens sometimes when applicants are above both 75ths.

Also, having your numbers might help put things in context...Chapman's 75th GPA/LSAT:3.68/161.
3.75/163: Fluke. Even if you misspelled every other word on your personal statement they should have let you in.
3.8/167: Why are you even applying to this school? Yield protect.

i don't think chapman is terrible, i srsly had a vivid dream of getting in chapman and was real happy, though it never came true. I heard friends tell me PD and DAs get paid a load in Orange county, i am not sure how reliable that info is, but if it were true, I figure chap would offer a good chance of getting one of those gigs

maybe your PS came off obnoxious? schools will deny you a seat if you do sound obnoxious. If that's not the issue, then probably YP.

At least a third of the personal statements I've read sound obnoxious. I really doubt that's a factor except at elite schools where they have a wide net of applicants (and even then, I think they'll give you the benefit of the doubt). Schools are looking after their own self-interests as much as you're looking out for yours. More likely they are yield protecting.

Chapman is a TTT. They don't even break the top 100. I've heard some of the law professors on NPR, and they seem like a bunch of partisan clowns, not legal scholars. I realize, of course, that's not really indicative of the school as a whole.

I don't want to post my exact numbers, but my LSAT was above 167.

YP seems like the obvious reason, but then why not waitlist instead? Honestly I am worried that something in my statement rubbed them the wrong way. Since I used more or less the same statement everywhere, its concerning.

I guess I will just assume it's YP and wait to see what the other schools do.

Seems like this is either really good or really bad...

I called today, but the admissions folks had already left. Then I discovered this email in my inbox, which was also sent today:
Dear XXXXXXXX,
This email is to inform you that you incorrectly recieved an email yesterday. Please check your online status for your correct decision status. Again, the email you recieved from us yesterday, denying you admission, was falsly sent to you.

Thank you for your understanding with this mistake, and we apologize for any inconviences this may have caused.

Sincerely,

Chapman Law Admissions

714-628-2525
So, now I'm really wondering if I'm the only one that received this. It seems pretty strange. Also, all four spelling errors are not mine, they are as written in the email.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
Just kidding ... it's still FREE!
