Purple as of today. Came with a nice handwritten note referencing my PS. NYU is definitely a possibility for me but I'll have to wait on scholarship info. Right now $75K at UVA is looking like my top choice.

Has anyone utilized the "Connect with a faculty member" thing on ASW? If so, was it helpful, or just awkward?

I did it but not sure if mine processed... I haven't heard from anyone and did it like a week ago.

Just got in via status checker and ASW! Super excited, as this is my first decision of the cycle.

Already a NYC resident, so if anyone has any questions about living in the city I can do my best to answer them. :)

Since I know a lot of us are interested in NYU's peers, I just did a really rough breakdown of NYU versus Chicago employment stats (c/o 2010). It really shows that the schools are almost identical:

Firms (101+ attorneys):
Chicago: .712 * ( .743+.081+.037) = 61.3%
NYU: .617 * (.811+.101+.037) = 58.6%

Federal Clerkships:
Chicago: .141 * .889 = 12.5%
NYU: .131*.794 = 10.4%

PI:
Chicago: 5.2%
NYU: 14.2%

And if we want, Government/Academia:
Chicago: 3.2%+1.6% = 4.8%
NYU: 6.7%+0.6% = 7.3%

Totals [firms + fed clerk + PI] ; (firms + fed clerk + PI + gov/academia):
Chicago = [79%] ; (83.8%)
NYU = [83.2%] ; (90.5%)

This is imperfect since some of the sub-101 attorney firms will be market paying, but it gives you good enough idea of their respective placement power.

Data from: http://www.law.uchicago.edu/prospective/employmentdata
http://www.law.nyu.edu/careerservices/e ... /index.htm

Note: I'm not sure if CLS has released their detailed employment statistics yet, but I'm guessing that it will be comparable. And, I did rough calculations for UVA, and they seem to have ~10-15% less placement into those three sectors (firms + fed clerk + PI), and similar placement to Chicago for all the above categories (not sure what to make of this -- we don't have breakdowns for state, local or federal government).

"Forget" the haters. I appreciate the data that you compile (and the manner in which you present it). I'd buy you a beer/drink if we met at an ASW.

Thanks guys :)

I think if we want to draw some conclusion from this data: it looks like CCN are pretty damn similar in prospects. If we look at just firms w/ 101+ attorneys and federal clerkships, then Chicago has a ~5% edge, but if we added PI, then NYU takes the edge. I'm sure not all PI gigs are prestigious (e.g., ACLU type stints), but many are hard to get. Thus the numbers become a bit of a wash.

Also, it looks like there is some difference in placement between CCN and MVP. Like I said above, a roughly 10-15% difference between V and CN for firms w/ 101+ attorneys , fed clerkships, and PI ... and a roughly 7-10% difference if we look at just firms + fed clerkships. The difference goes away if we add government to the mix (83 V along with 83 Chi), but again we don't have a detailed breakdown for gov jobs: what percent of them are federal, state or local?

Another thing to keep in mind is that for all schools, it looks like students move slightly more towards PI/gov jobs during the economic downturn.

Thank you for these stats!!!

Anyone has thoughts on job prospect of international students? What I find on most law schools' websites is basically about LLM. I know that international JD students are few in number and the sample, if we take one school, might not be representative. But I would really like to know what to expect upon my graduation from a T6, for eg, NYU?

I'd say at that point it would be dependent on your performance at law school. Barring language barriers (which might affect interviews), I would assume you would be viewed in the context of the rest of the pool - unless you're talking about the international job market?

No, I am talking about the U.S. market.
The reason I am asking is I heard two different stories recently. I have a Chinese friend graduating next year. She told me that in the current economic situation, law firms are looking into international market and thus more willing to sponsor H1B visa. But the other friend of mine who is also graduating said just the opposite. Big law firms are cutting personnel so why would they even bother to hire some foreigners?
Both of them are studying in a T14. I am not sure about their GPA but from what I heard, they both did quite good in 1L.

Received a congratulatory phone call today!!! Yesterday I would have told you I'd turn down NYU without a scholarship, but now I can't really see that happening... just crossing my fingers for Root!

Congratulations to all other admittees!

For those of you who don't know NYC very well or have never visited or who just want to love on the place, I thought I'd share this time lapse video. It's spare on Village shots, but it's a cool look at how vibrant and frenetic and unexpectedly beautiful city life is in Manhattan:

More proof that NYC is the best place in the country.
