So, unfortunately, it looks like they may take their sweet time.

so my theory that they'll have most of the acceptances out this week looks pretty bad now, eh?

what's new...

I can't decide if this is going to help my chances (if a bunch say they aren't going they might have to dip lower into the applicant pool), hurt me (Maybe everyone will commit and they'll offer less spots than they would have), or neither of the above.

I'm thinking about this too much.

Yes, you are. Don't, because it won't help.

That said, I'm in as of yesterday! :) Excited for my letter this week an binder next!

I'd guess that most schools will have a huge wave of movement in the beginning of march, that gives them time to go through all the apps now that the deadline's passed, plus, in utah's case, those intention to enroll cards will have been sorted out by then

Email from the Dean's office today; this is now pretty much a slam dunk. ABA review committee basically said all you need is a new building and the rest will take care of itself:

Dear Friends:

I am thrilled to report to all of you the results of yesterday’s decision by the Utah State Legislature’s Infrastructure and General Government Appropriations Subcommittee.

The Subcommittee ranked us fourth on the priority list for all state building projects on the non-state capital funding list, and approved our project and budget of $60.5 million for the College’s new facility and allocated $750,000 of annual support for the operations and maintenance budget (O&M) for the new building (beginning in 2013).

Although we still await endorsement of this decision by the full Committee and Legislature, this represents a major step forward in the realization of our exciting dreams for the College and the broader community. This also reflects an enormous achievement by each and every one of you and strong political recognition of the College’s invaluable contributions to the state.

Naturally, I will keep you informed of our progress through the conclusion of the legislative session.

Many thanks to all,

Hiram

I'm starting to really consider Utah. I was accepted a few weeks back and am pretty excited for ASD. Anybody else plan on going?

When is it? I went to UofU undergrad, so I wasn't planning on it, but I'm thinking about it now anyways.

According to the packet it's Monday, March 26th. How'd you like living in Utah for undergrad? I am from Michigan and went to college in Boston, so have no idea what it's like.

Luckily Salt Lake City is pretty cool, but it's definitely no Boston. Access to skiing/mt biking/hiking is awesome. You will definitely have to get used to the Mormon thing. It won't constantly interfere with your life in SLC, but you'll notice it, and if you end up working elsewhere in the state you'll need to be ready for it. I'm a non-mormon who grew up in Utah, so I'm acclimated, but I still despise its overbearing nature on our government and culture.

To reiterate though, SLC is a cool town, cheap COL, and the Mormon culture won't smother you there. You should definitely visit before accepting.

I was hoping someone here who has been accepted or is a student at Utah could help me. I submitted my application at the very end of December and I haven't heard anything from them. How long should I wait before I call them?

I applied in October and haven't heard anything yet. I wouldn't be worried.

The U is notorious for taking a long time with acceptances and scholarships. You're probably okay.

I heard back crazy fast, which was really surprising, especially considering that I still haven't hear back from the majority of my schools (sent in early December).

I applied on 1/01, went complete on 1/10 and was accepted on 2/01 via phone call. I wouldn't worry though, looks like a lot of qualified people on LSN still haven't heard back. Hopefully that phone call is right around the corner!

This is all 100% true. I love Salt Lake, but the U of U is probably my 19th choice out of 20 schools I applied to just because I'm afraid of getting stuck in the state of Utah. If you are Mormon, you'll have no problem with the culture. If you aren't, it can get annoying. Salt Lake is pretty open minded compared to the rest of the state though.

I do have to admit that SLC has an amazing rave scene, and the food is some of the best I've ever had.

Thanks for the awesome info guys... I guess I will have to visit to really get a good idea of whether I would like it there. I do like Utah's low cost, and the ability to get in-state tuition after the first year. After perusing craigslist, it also looks like COL is very reasonable.

On another note, I hear the music scene is surprisingly good for a relatively small market (compared to LA, Chicago, NYC etc...). What do you think? Also, do you feel that Utah is fairly well recognized as a school in the Pacific Northwest, where I eventually want to end up? I realize it won't be like U Washington or U Oregon, but it's much closer than some of my other options.

The Pacific Northwest is a difficult market to break into for people who go to schools there, let alone for those outside of it. Unless you have real connections it would be pretty tough to move there without some significant legal work experience first in the mountain west.

COL is super reasonable and in general going to the U is quite cheap.

Absolutely, mostly for the mountains, economy, and price.

Just to add my $0.02

I echo what coldshoulder has said about Utah. It can be a wonderful place if you can put up with the culture. Putting up with that culture (Mormonism) can be a real pain in the ass if you have a different point of view on pretty much anything.

I don't consider myself to be a left wing super socialist, but I am treated that way for simply saying I sway more donkey than elephant. With that said, Mormons get a bad vibe for what goes on in Provo (BYU) and the rest of Utah county. Salt Lake county and especially Salt Lake City are much different. For the most part, as long as you aren't obnoxious and in their face, mormons will just let you do your thing. If you look to move up to Park City, suddenly Mormons are the minority (at least in voice).

Visit Salt Lake before you decide to go to the U. That is a must.
The food and music scene is really good, but the LDS church can rub many the wrong way and eliminate those positives.

Isn't today the day those intention to enroll slips are due? Maybe decisions will come soon?
