I remember that someone on this Arizona State c/o 2015 topic said they contacted the admissions department and said that applicants were up this year.

ASU Admissions Applicants Down (LinkRemoved)

Down 23% from 2009 means .23 * 2500 ~1900 applicants.

2011 entering class numbers 2011 ASU Admissions Numbers (LinkRemoved)

2334 applicants for the entering Class of 2011. This years applicants are down 19% from last year.

Now compare the NALP numbers with the ASU posted numbers ASU posted Class Numbers

2011 Entering Class:
---------------ASU Numbers ------VS----------------- NALP Numbers
    - 171 enrolled first-year students ----- VS ----Size of entering class: 168
    - 75th Percentile: 165 LSAT / 3.8 GPA----- VS ---- 75th Percentile: 165 LSAT / 3.77 GPA

    - 25th Percentile: 160 LSAT / 3.4 GPA----- VS ---- 25th Percentile: 160 LSAT / 3.43 GPA
    - 26 percent students of color ------ VS ---- 38 students = 23% Students of Color 28 URMS = 17% URMs
    - 74 undergraduate institutions represented----- VS ---- 74 undergraduate institutions represented
    - Average age at entry: 26 ----- VS ---- NOT GIVEN
    - Approximately 2,500 applicants ----- VS ----- Applications received: 2334

ASU website numbers Entering class of 2011
    - 171 enrolled first-year students
    - 75th Percentile: 165 LSAT / 3.8 GPA
    - 50th Percentile: 162 LSAT / 3.6 GPA
    - 25th Percentile: 160 LSAT / 3.4 GPA
    - 26 percent students of color
    - 74 undergraduate institutions represented
    - Average age at entry: 26
    - Approximately 2,500 applicants
NALP Numbers Entering Class of 2011
    --Size of entering class: 168
    - 75th Percentile: 165 LSAT / 3.77 GPA
    - 50th Percentile: 162 LSAT / 3.62 GPA

    38 students = 23% Students of Color 28 URMS = 17% URMs
    74 undergraduate institutions represented
    NOT GIVEN
    - Applications received: 2334

Another interesting fact is that two years ago ASU accepted 191 applicants but the 2nd year class has 207 students (LinkRemoved). Which means they accept around 20 transfers a year.

Did you hear back from Dean Soto? The email I received yesterday was from her, or at least the letter was (I do not think it was her that emailed it). I emailed back reiterating my interest, etc. but no response.

It sounded like polysuyguy received yesterday's email, but I am not sure who else has???

Well, I investigated. Sounds like my half-hearted withdraw was taken quite seriously, as I have been withdrawn from the wait list. I still however have a call into Dean Soto, who is supposed to call me this afternoon.

Are you going to try and be reinstated on the waitlist?

I got the e-mail. It is written by Dean Soto, but sent by Chitra Damania.

That is so painful it is funny. How dysfunctional!

1)Can you ask her how big the waitlist is?
Ask her why one report says 171 first year students and another one says 168?
Ask her how many acceptances she gave out this year so far?
Ask her why the discrepancy in minorities between what she reported and what NALP reported?
Ask her if she likes her new promotion?
Ask her how her diet is going?
Ask her why the admissions department is two months behind the rest of the country?

Please do, even if you end up withdrawing. Can you even attend if accepted at this point? Sorry for the frustration, I share your pain.

I'm going to stick with my withdraw...no sense in attempting to be re-instated. I can't go at this point anyways. But, I do intend on asking some seriously tough questions.

I am a little perplexed because previously (other years), when people tried to withdraw from the waitlist because they were frustrated with its speed, ASU tried to talk the people out of it. However, this year, you make a non-withdrawal withdrawal and they immediately process it.

That doesn't bode well for the waitlist this year.

Who knows with them...let me see what I can find out. I'm not sure how they considered me wishing to discuss the wait list and my withdrawal possibility as a formal withdrawal but that's a conversation for a different day.

Then again though, why even keep a waitlist if they have no intentions of being able to pull from it? They may not be hurting for candidates to fill their class, but I would think they have at least some room left otherwise everyone would have been released from the waitlist already, right? At least this is what I keep hoping anyway.

ASU rising 2L here. I heard tell of folks getting spots late into the Summer last year. Fact is, there are folks in at ASU that are waiting on higher up schools, and if they get admitted up, then ASU will want to bring in someone else. The turmoil around law admissions this year, in addition to ASU's big (unexpected) rise in the rankings, means that nobody really knows how this cycle is going to play out. Our admissions office appears to be hedging big time.

I have heard that people can be admitted mere days before the commencement of class; assuming this is a possibility here, when would they finally notify any lingering waitlisters that they have been rejected - after classes start?

Even though when I called one time the person I talked with said they accepted enough so that they shouldn't have to go to the waitlist, I don't believe that.
I think they will eventually go to the waitlist. But it is not like they consult me or win gold medals for transparency.

I talk to some people at lunch who have a theory and this is what they theorize about ASU. They are all familiar with law school admissions.

15 Points of Light

1. ASU thought their rank jump would mean more applicants would want to attend (higher yield)
2. ASU made a small waitlist (see 1)
3. ASU admissions was slower than usual this year because of Dean Shelli Soto's promotion, the new Dean, and their funding is way down so they are understaffed.
4. ASU was hit by countless accusations of deception because of their jump in the rankings.
5. ASU was blindsided by the recent ABA and LSAC regulations concerning verification of LSATs and GPAs.
6. Those new regulations came right before the time ASU traditionally moves the waitlist.
7. ASU doesn't want to lose their rankings and lead credence to #4.
8. ASU needs to get their enrollment back up to cover funding cuts (told to me by Shelli Soto at ASU Law Day), and an email from ASU said they want an enrollment of 200 this year.
9. After processing withdrawals, ASU realized that their numbers and enrollment are considerably lower than last years.
10. Even if they accepted everyone off the waitlist, they wouldn't have enough to fill the class.
11. They have to do the entire admissions process again and get people to reconsider.
12. First they start with the withdrawals with scholarship, then they go to the withdrawals without scholarship, and then they go to the waitlists.
13. They have to spend their limited resources on gaining back the withdrawals.
14. No one that I have contacted has yet to hear back from ASU on scholarship increases.
15. When the withdrawals are finally exhausted then they go to the waitlist.

Is this regarding negotiations?

ETA: or applicants that had withdrawn?

Yes, these are the applicants who withdrew, and then ASU offered them more scholarship money if they would reconsider. So they said they were interested. None of them have yet to hear back as of yesterday.

I think it has been a little over a week, which is milliseconds in ASU admissions time.

This translates to more waiting. I feel like I'm on a deserted island trying to spell my gpa and lsat out in lines of rocks while the ASU Admissions 747 flies over, completely heedless. Maybe if I resign myself to waiting a year... or moving to Tucson, an admittance letter will be a pleasant surprise. Like the drink you forgot about in the car in the morning and are overjoyed to find when you come back in the afternoon (if its not summer).

Have you considered calling up admissions and asking for more money?

At first I thought ASU was punishing the accepted students for not withdrawing, but with no word back about scholarship increase, I am not sure.

I have played this scenario out in my mind many times.

My problem is that I have this beautiful fully furnished home waiting for me on a lake in Phoenix.

this isn't the home, but it has many similarities.
