They just sent out an email about admitted students day, by the way.

Still waiting to hear about scholarship information. Should be sometime next week, I'm hoping.

Thanks guys,

I got the letter yesterday. It was postmarked later than I assumed it was based on the status checker. But it's all good because I'm in!

I can't go to admitted students day though.. so that's a bummer.

Thanks! It's probably the top of my list right now, since I'm from SC and the price is more reasonable for me than most of the other schools I've been accepted to. I think I'm toying with the idea of SC or Charleston, but I'm still unsure.

I got accepted to Charleston, but they have sent me no information about scholarships. I'm probably going to tell them I'm withdrawing if SC offers me any sort of money. Should hear from them soon.

When I went to visit SC, pretty much everyone told me to go to SC over Charleston. What I've read is more or less the same story. I'm sure others can tell you about how insular a market the state is, and how you need to network and make a lot of contacts in order to get a job.

Has anyone negotiated scholly's with South Carolina?

Also, could someone please give me some "good" reasons why I should attend South Carolina (Other than the weather) :).. From looking everywhere on the internet, I can seem to only find bad things, I am from Ohio as well, and have heard that SC law is "insular".

Everyone I met in the admissions office and during my tour were nice as hell. We yakked for about an hour after the tour was over (this was off of application season) and I got to meet a lot of really friendly students while I was taking the tour. The campus itself is beautiful, although the building is old. It's cheap to go to, and it is centrally located around the power structure of the state. Both the capital building and the Supreme Court are a short 10 minute walk away.

Both of the professors whose classes I sat in were friendly, welcoming (one publicly introduced me) and answered all the questions I had afterwards. I can't compare it to any other experiences because I haven't toured other law schools, but I was quite impressed.

That said, there are downsides. It is an insular market, and Columbia isn't going to win any beautiful city awards anytime soon. I'm personally not as big a football fan, so the gamecocks aren't as big a draw for me. The building is old but functional, and the library smells like old books. It is also a parking nightmare, like most universities, and being next to the capital only exacerbates that. Everyone on here will say that the job market for lawyers in SC is weak. I personally don't know enough to find out whether that's true or not, but it IS insular and you should expect to work your ass off networking. There has always been a lot of hate on university of SC, if you look through the previous threads, but I found that a fair bit came from people who had either not been to the school and were prospective students or had experience in another part of the state. Make of that what you will.

Bluntly, if you want to practice law in South Carolina, you should go here. If you don't want to practice law in South Carolina, go elsewhere.

The state market is very insular. Every practicing attorney in SC expects you to go to USC. I can attest to this as I've gotten myself into some awkward situations with a few lawyers recently. (Hint: "I'm not sure if I want to stay in SC, so USC isn't exactly my number one choice" IS NOT the right thing to say! Whoops!)

BUT a lot of people are saying Charleston will soon surpass SC. Is there truth to this? Some, but I'm not sure how much. I want to see how that plays out. Does anyone know if Charleston will be looked at by US News and World Report since its fully accredited now? Not saying that's the end-all-be-all to law schools, but its a good enough judge.

Also, I really want to know when SC will begin building the new facility. Has anyone else seen the 3D video? That thing will be NICE. I would not mind going there every day.

I meant to tell you, when I toured Charleston, I met with Dean Benfield and I asked him about money and he told me scholarship stuff would be sent out mid-march. I'm hoping it will be done a little earlier than that though.

I think it depends entirely on your numbers. I have been complete since December 2nd, and haven't had any movement since then. I am also pretty sure a good number of the people on here have the same predicament.

Did they send scholarship info out with acceptance letters?

I got the letter but no money. I'm keeping my hope up that they send out scholarship info after.

As someone who did their undergrad at CofC, do not, do not, DO NOT, go to Charleston School of Law. It is a joke, for profit institution that is prohibitively expensive and offers terribile job prospects. I know a ton of people that went there. I know one that has gainful employment.

Oh, and to answer your question, no. It won't. Not now, not soon, probably not ever.

Im STILL wondering if the March 1st deadline that I was told about for potential scholarships matters or not anymore.

Dean Hutchison was very pleasant, but I have heard ZILCH... Dang : (

Assuming I'm accepted, and assuming it's before that day, I will be there.
