Accepted via snail mail. Curious to see what kind of scholarship they offer...

I just got a response about potential scholarships that should be out in the mail March first. I got a great offer from SLU and would like input on if or when I should share that with usc as the potential scholarship stuff comes in the future

I got accepted! My file went complete on Friday, February 17 and my decision letter was mailed the following Friday on February 24. I was really surprised at the super fast turnaround. I wish all schools would be like that! Like other people have posted, the letter said that I was in consideration for a merit scholarship and that all decisions about that would be mailed at the beginning of March.

FYI, LSAT: 161, GPA: 3.45 (Tulane, history major)

Congrats! I am STILL waiting for review. Might be time to send an email or make a phone call I suppose.

Also, the packet said I received a merit scholarship so I am considered an in-state resident. I am from Ohio, so I would really like to get out of here and am very interested in South Carolina. Would anyone be willing to fill me in on any information regarding the campus/law day/law building??

FYI: OOS, non-URM, 20 years old, 158 LSAT, 3.84 GPA, Finance major (terrible choice), Kent State University

Campus is small, but nice. The law building could use some work though. I attend USC UG so if you have any questions about the city itself I, or handful of others on this forum who also attend school here, would be more than happy to try to answer them.

Called admissions today to ask why I have been in review for well over three months.

Apparently, at South Carolina, it doesn't matter how early you submit your application! They read all the applications that are "competitive" before they look at any others. They admitted that my application may not have even been looked at yet, which is hilarious because every other school I've applied to, including ones that had more applicants, have had the time to.

Nice to know.

This is actually normal. A lot of school review applications and order of how competitive you are. If you are not at or above the medians, they probably won't review you unless they have spots left over after better applicants have withdrawn. The world sucks sometimes. I do think that they should at least waitlist the less competitive applicants so they have some concrete answer from the school.




On another note, I'm withdrawing soon, so for those of you waiting, there should be a spot and some scholarship money opening up soon.

I don't think that being one point below median for LSAT and well above 75th percentile for GPA is deserving of being left in the up in the air for over 3 months. Not expecting auto-admit status here, but anything aside from me having to call four different times for an answer would've been nice.

Say what you want about how this is normal, but considering the seven other schools (four ranked significantly higher) I have applied to have not been anywhere near this horrendous, this leaves me with a very bad impression of the school. Especially when someone on LSN with a 2.68 was accepted with $$ just a week ago (and about 6 more where that came from).

Well, to be honest, I'm not terribly sympathetic to his cause either. They know what they want and they're going for it. I don't think that makes them a worse school.

It's probably not the school for you. It sounds like you have plenty of good offers to other schools, and I wish you the best.

No one has said it makes them a worse school. The implication is that they are losing out on applicants that are borderline. The vast majority of people accepted so far will not be attending USC. Providing timely responses to other applicants and USC targeting "highly qualified" applicants is not mutually exclusive. Nearly every other school succeeds in doing both.

I don't recall making any sort of argument about the school's quality. I'm also not to sure why you're trying to argue this back and forth either. I also suggest you reread the rules about school quality debates on these forums.

No one is arguing quality, you introduced that line of thinking if you read your previous post. I started this school's thread, I have no interest in derailing it.

Edit: For clarification purposes, I don't believe Kmokeefe is bashing the quality of education to be received at USC (I believe she is actually an SC resident, and based on her applying to the school, I would assume she would like to attend). From my perspective, she is venting her frustration at an admissions process that she disagrees with (I happen to as well). Because of the slow or lack of response from the admissions office, it forces competitive applicants who would have most likely attended USC to not be able to attend at all, even if admitted. Do other schools have similar cases? Sure. However, from my perspective, USC is an abnormally high offender in this regard. I applied to 20 schools in September and October. I have heard back from all but two (of which USC is one of the two), so it is definitely disappointing to see an opportunity slip away.

You're spot on bmili, I wasn't even trying to make a definitive qualification about the quality of the school in itself. Rather, just saying that my experience with admissions (or whatever you want to call what i was referencing i can't think of a good word right now) gave me a bad impression of the school, just my subjective opinion.

Not looking for sympathy, or a pat on the back, or whatever, just detailing my experience here because I know there are several people here in the same boat as me.

Also, I think you're right bmili about how USC is an abnormally high offender in this, I feel like I recall from reading past applicant threads that students had the same experience. I was told that I should hear something by March 15th. In the rare chance that I was accepted, do I want to have only two weeks to make the most important decision of my life? Not really. That's why I think you're right in saying "it forces competitive applicants who would have most likely attended USC to not be able to attend at all, even if admitted." And THAT'S why I'm frustrated.

Sorry if this is derailing the thread at all, even though I do think the quality of an experience with admissions is important because it is one of the first impressions you get of the workings of a law school.

Hey thanks! I had no idea about the April 30th deadline, since all of my other schools are around April 1st. But, that does help a lot though. I sent in my fafsa to them already anyway, so hopefully they would send fin aid packages sometime before the deadline, if accepted. Good luck to you!

Has anyone heard anything this week?

I've checked my status page and it says decision made, letter sent 2/27, but I haven't received anything yet.

^It took a couple days for the status checker to say "decision was mailed" after my status checker said decision was made. Then, it took about four-five business days to receive the decision letter in the mail after the status checker said decision was mailed.

Does anyone know if South Carolina gives some sort of travel stipend for visiting? I am from Ohio, so this won't be a very cheap visit for me.
