I emailed the dean trying to negotiate the scholarship. Basically what he told me is that there isn't any room to increase it at this time, and that they dont increase the aid until after deposits are paid. Now that may be directed towards me personally, but I definitely got the feeling that they aren't giving out money after the admission letter.Scotusnerd wrote:I was wondering that too.
Here's what I understand about their scholarships from the letter they sent me:
They hand out out of state/instate scholarships with letters of admittance. I'm guessing they do this based on grades, quality of application or possibly a first-come, first-serve basis.
I was informed that they would determine merit scholarships in early march, after most applications had been received. The Committee on Admissions determines this, which I understand is professors and administrators.
Incidently, they have an admitted student day on March 24th.

I actually visited the school recently and they said that a large part of their scholarships would not go out until March or so. This kind of surprised me, so I asked just to make sure this wasn't the loan packages. They clarified that no, more scholarships go out in March once they have a better idea of the makeup of their class.iosborn12 wrote:I emailed the dean trying to negotiate the scholarship. I've applied to Charleston Law school as well, just to get some leverage and just in case something happens. I emailed them and got a fee waiver without having to even give a reason.

Scotus,
Just my two cents but I don't think USC cares about what money you get from Charleston. I would think Wake, UGA, GSU, Florida, etc would be far better options for leverage.

Interesting. I guess maybe it is just me, and that I am definitely not geting a merit scholarship. I even brought up other admissions and scholarship offers that would make COA significantly cheaper (Bama and UGA), and he said he inderstands that it puts them at a disadvantage for me, but there isn't anything they can do now. He said the most they give out after the deposit deadline was $2000 in the past, but I could contact them in March to see what the picture is like then.auburnbelle89 wrote:I actually visited the school recently and they said that a large part of their scholarships would not go out until March or so. Again, it could just be my situation that I am definitely not going to get anything more, but I got the feeling from the emails that the initial offers weren't going to be increased.

They mailed my decision out today according to status checker... wish it would be emailed. Any tips from those accepted?

I sent my application in around Mid January. So I'm pleasantly surprised. I guess what I was asking is if anybody who has been admitted knows of some tips I.E. if seat deposits are listed/not listed on the status checker etc.
I don't think I'll make it into SC, but you never know anymore

No, the status checker didn't tip it off in any way. But with such a quick turnaround, I would put my money on you being accepted.RaiderBlue17 wrote:I sent my application in around Mid January. That's a fair statement. I have a surprising number of friends applying for this cycle, including an ex (3.75, 173) who informed me last week that she was DINGED by W&L. I was shocked. She's also applying to South Carolina (application complete: 1/10) and hasn't heard anything. Guess you never know....RaiderBlue17 wrote:159 and 3.7 GPA.

Not to be too picky, but if your ex is getting dinged from W & L, there might be other problems with their application.
Seems like the schools have an odd set of standards this semeseter, and are less willing to negotiate.
That's fine by me.

Not picky at all. She only applied for leverage potential. Admission seemed a foregone conclusion, so we talked freely about how much $$$$ they'd offer. Imagine the surprise when she was denied. Her PS and ethics essay were solid, though her Yankee was showing, if you get my meaning. Word around the campfire suggests W&L is a school for "Old Southern Money." News to me, but perhaps that explains it.Scotusnerd wrote:Not to be too picky, but if your ex is getting dinged from W & L, there might be other problems with their application.
