Mine was separate, the scholarship offer came about a few weeks later.Magnifique1908 wrote:I got a letter about financial aid and housing. Did any of you get that with your scholarship offer or separately? Trying to ascertain whether or not I can expect a scholarship.

Wow that's scary, I haven't heard a word yet and everyday that goes by I'm getting nervous to see the white envelope. I would definitely go to UCI it's a 30 minute drive for me!hadisious wrote:Waitlisted today via snail mail as well. Applied mid-november.

I wouldn't be too scared. UCI is taking huge steps to be competitive with other schools in SoCal.lrslayer wrote:joining this party late guys. i was skeered for a while due to the unranked think but thought what the hell? so... 167/3.24/great softs.. good luck to those still waiting.

10K/year with 2.0 stipulation. It helps the cause, but that still leaves a huge amount of debt.

Waitlisted! UCI is my top choice, so I'm happy it isn't a flat denial. Does anyone know if they will take a 3rd letter of recommendation from a waitlister?

"Renewable with a 2.0" is essentially a guarantee that you'll get it all 3 years. Congrats!Magnifique1908 wrote:Didnt have to wait long.....$55,000! Renewable witha 2.0. Definitely put Irvine in the running. Will be visiting in March.

Is that total or per year?Magnifique1908 wrote:Didnt have to wait long.....$55,000! Renewable witha 2.0. Definitely put Irvine in the running. Will be visiting in March.
If per year, why would they be giving more than the actual cost of tuition?

It says "$55,000 for your first academic year". I looked at OOS tuition and fees for this year and it is a little over $54,000. Maybe they are accounting for an increase for next year.

I'm still waiting to see how this cycle plays out. Definitely enthusiastic about the offer; it's going to be hard to beat.aarias11 wrote:So I think we have two people with free rides here on TLS... are you guys taking it??Magnifique1908 wrote:Didnt have to wait long.....$55,000! Yeah well you have a good card to play up your sleeve, I really do like the way the school has put it's name out there in three years. About the rankings Idk if it really will debut in top 20 or not but I'm pretty sure it will get there eventually.moneybagsphd wrote:I'm still waiting to see how this cycle plays out. Same. I have a brand new little one and a fiancee so his ability to find a job and money are huge factors for me. I have never been to Irvine, so it will take a visit to see if it will work for us for the next three years. The money is a huge draw though, full tuition for a new parent is hard to turn down.moneybagsphd wrote:I'm still waiting to see how this cycle plays out. i think it'd be hard to find a better place to raise a child than irvine. you're gonna love it, at least in that respect.Magnifique1908 wrote:Same. Congrats! So a tough thing to think about. If you stay single and don't register your fiancee as a domestic partner, you won't officially be able to live together in on-campus housing (meaning he can't be on the lease, have a key, etc), and you might be better off off-campus, BUT you will qualify for free childcare which is worth about $1350 a month here at the infant and toddler center. If your fiancee makes less than 35K a year you also qualify for subsidies for childcare, but not sure how that works. Do your research on comparing the cost of living off-campus vs the cost of childcare to make your decision. If you need full-time childcare, it can be very, very expensive with a working spouse. PM me if you want more info on this.

Thank you!!! Wow. This is why I love this board. On campus housing would be convenient moving across the country, but I'd much rather live off campus and keep a "single" status for that free childcare. His current daycare is about $800 a month and we are both working. Another reason why scholarships are so important...we're accustomed to two incomes. Consider that PM sent!uci2013 wrote:Magnifique1908 wrote:

Re: UCI (UC Irvine) c/o 2015 Applicants (2011-2012 cycle)
I applied to UCI, and still waiting for their response. I am trying to ask myself everyday whether I would go to UCI with no significant money.
Would any of you go to UCI with no money? and if so why? The school does not have an alumni base, will cost ~200K to attend, and we don't know yet how the employment prospects will be compared to say UCLA, Loyola, USD or USC. Also from the recent admits, it looks like anyone admitted to UCI will probably be admitted to a T20 school. So if you have to choose between a T20 and UCI, would you choose UCI, assuming both are without money?
I am not trying to malign UCI or anything like that, but just trying to understand what their "pull" might be.

I'm in a similar situation. UCI with a minor scholarship, in at WUSTL and GW (Right around T20). I want to stay in California so UCI is an appealing option.zinc wrote:I applied to UCI, and still waiting for their response. For me, I want to live and work in Orange County. Considering that the only other law schools in OC are Chapman and Whittier, UCI students will be much more competitive for the best legal jobs in the area.
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
