I was going to do it today but I think I'll wait until after ASW to submit. Do you think we'll be able to see some of the different housing options during ASW? Also, I was looking into this a little bit but got mixed impressions, I saw that some apartments are furnished and others aren't, is there a way to request one or the other? I realllly don't want to have to bring more stuff than necessary from the East Coast!

Yes. So essentially all of the private housing on campus is furnished so Vista Del Campo, VDC Norte, Puerta Del Sol, and Camino Del Sol. Both Palo Verde and Verano Place (run by UCI Housing) are not furnished. So I guess you'd just say which you'd prefer. The private housing is much nicer (and probably where I'll live if I go to UCI as I lived there as an undergrad) but way more expensive.

Just shop at IKEA. CA has a bunch of them. Cheap furnishings.

I'm pretty sure there's a housing tour on the schedule. Also, you're right there are some apartments that are furnished and some that are not. They are in different communities however. For example, Verano is unfurnished, while the American Campus communities are all furnished. These include VDC, VDC Norte, Camino del Sol and Puerta del Sol.

When you fill out your application, you'll have to rate your preferences. Meaning you won't just pick one, but choose preference of community, apartment size (i.e. two bedrooms), and move-in date. Then at the end, you will be asked which is more important to you among community, size and move-in date.

That's really the big issue for me. The most affordable option definitely comes before anything else. Speaking of finances, are we all still waiting on the need-based aid packets? I was really hoping to have that information before my trip. A little more cash from UCI would secure this as my first choice.

I think everyone is still waiting on need-based aid. I visited UC Davis last week and their financial aid office said they wouldn't be sending final need-based awards out until they set tuition for next year which will be on April 2nd. She said they were still waiting for the state legislature to decide how much they'll be allocating to UC for next year. Maybe Irvine is doing things the same way?

Anyway, I was selected for verification of all my financial aid stuff so I'll be dropping it off at the law school tomorrow so I'll ask then as I'd like to know sooner rather than closer to the seat deposit deadline.

Yep, it'll be just like being a UC undergrad = you get in thinking you'll pay something, then they raise it after you say you're going, then they raise twice more after that. Fun times.

Glad you're aboard though- wouldn't trade going to UCI for anything else!

This is crazy. How can schools expect us to commit without knowing the cost? Normally I wouldn't be concerned as it's the norm for tuition to rise 4-5% a year but given the increases in tuition at UC Law Schools over the last few years I won't be committing until I see a final number.

But see, even if they give us a number, they include someplace somewhere that it may be subject to change. That's why I really appreciated UIUC's promise that your tuition would stay the same for the three years you go there.

You know, thinking about it, the one difference about undergrad is that they adjust your aid to offset the tuition changes. It would be a good question for the UCI financial aid office if they'd do the same for law students.

I was looking at housing for awhile yesterday. Is everyone aiming for 1 bedrooms or to have a roommate? I think I'd like to live by myself, so I'm thinking my priorities will be PDS studio, then Palo Verde's 1 bedroom units. There's only like 64 studios at PDS so my odds are probably not too good for that. And it looks like at Verano you can't get a 1 bedroom as a single student?

I'm not making ASW so I'm excited to hear everyone's impressions...

For housing, I haven't looked into this yet. We will have plenty of time to view housing options at ASW (there is a tour schedule). Furthermore, ASW is the time to meet people to live with for next year . I'm looking for roommates for sure. My only requirement is that the kitchen needs to be clean since I love to cook (beer batter onion rings, homemade pizza, other stuff). Lastly, if I must, I have extended family to rely upon that live 4 blocks away from UCI Law... though I won't get much peace and quiet to study...

Second, I talked to Estuardo while I was attending Reigniting Community: Strengthening the Asian Pacific American Identity @ UCI Law last Friday and he told me that the Admissions Office is going to try to fit everyone in for Dean Chemerinsky's class (albeit without guests).

Like I said before, I can't wait to meet you all there! Again, the second to last event is going to be amazing ... There is a reason why they are taking us there =). Too bad it is going to be partialy cloudy on that day, but it might add to the awesomeness!!!

+1 for finding a roommate at ASW. I wouldn't really like to live on my own, but unfortunately, I don't know anyone else attending UCI Law that needs a roommate. All my buddies are 2Ls and have their housing situated. I went to UCI for my undergrad, but I had lived off campus. I would like to live on campus, though, for law school since it's literally across the street and much cheaper.

Well, I am coming with my spouse and was not allowed to even select a studio as an option, meaning that they are probably reserved for just one student. I do know that families get priority with the one and three bedrooms, but from what I understand grad students do get some priority to live by themselves. So hopefully, you'll get what you ask for.

I requested a studio/1 bedroom at PDS and VDC...from what I hear though they are hard to come by. They did mention though that they try and place law students w/ other law students when it comes to the two bedrooms; so at least we won't have to live w/ those booooooring business students
