I don't want to do big law, I don't think. I went to college in Philly and am sick of the Northeast. I'm from VA and want to move back down South for good. Guess you could say I have more of a geographical pref than a field pref. Never been to Bama before...going to ASP in a week or two...also going to see the other three schools. Don't know if I can stay in Alabama forever or even the Gulf Coast area on a whole, but it would be very cheap compared to the rest. I'm going to try to negotiate with the two schools I have offers from, too.

Thanks for the advice. I know C-H is a lot more fun than W-S, but what about job opportunities afterwards?
Like I said, UNC has an unparallelled reputation in the state. In fact, most of our elected officials come from UNC Law (with the exception of the last two governors, almost ALL governors came from there). Chapel Hill's location in the Research Triangle also gives one good networking opportunities in the Raleigh/Durham market.

Wake is a good school and you can't go wrong going there but I'd definitely take UNC. Wake and UNC could get you jobs in NC and possibly even your home market in VA. Alabama will keep you tied to Alabama.
I wouldn't worry that much about getting back to VA from either UNC or Wake (or Vandy). You'll have to do a little legwork at either just because VA employers don't typically send reps to OCIs, but the fact that you have a tie to Virginia is a big deal when it comes to getting a job. I would just recommend that when you start applying to places in VA you try to work something into your résumé about being from there, and definitely into your cover letter.

That being said, GO HEELS.

I used to think UNC had a significant edge since there are so many alums in practice in the area (UNC alums def dominate the NC bench), but now I'm leaning toward calling it more of an even race. I think if you are top of your class at either school, you have an excellent shot at NC Big Law. Notably, the largest NC firm is based in Winston-Salem, but they also have large offices here (RTP and Raleigh) and they hire from both schools. Although, I know the Winston-Salem office hired one summer associate from UNC this year, which seemed a bit odd and indicates to me they clearly respect Carolina even at the home office in Wake's backyard. If you're an NC resident, the in-state tuition at Carolina makes it a virtual no-brainer, unless you're getting major $ from Wake. Plus, Chapel Hill is a great place to live. I'd have to be paid outright to live in Winston Salem, but that's just a personal preference.

Justice W asserts that the run between UNC and Wake Forest Schools of Law has become "more of an even race." I respectfully dissent. Based on the evidence on record, I believe that a more correct evaluation of the facts presented is "go Heels."

By the way, this is what happens to your sense of humor when you come to law school. Are you sure this is what you want?

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but does UNC look at the highest LSAT score? Would they look poorly on a retake being lower than an original score? Thank you for any information.

What the heck is this? UNC updates their website and the status of a bunch of applicants in late March and then........wait for it...............nothing? Really? Uhhh, tease. Apparently our emotions are to be thoroughly messed with.

Looks like they've updated (AGAIN) the message at the top of the status checker screen to say: you'll know by April 1 if you're in the "first round" of acceptances. Seriously???

I know the topic of UNC's notoriously slow admissions process has been discussed to incredible lengths, but do the admissions people know how much it sucks to be on the other end of this process? Maybe they're short staffed, maybe they read every application twice, maybe there is some other reason for this ridiculously drawn out process. I can't think of another school that repeatedly does this - hanging applicants out to dry until the very end, forcing competitive applicants to choose another school when Chapel Hill is where they want to be only b/c the school drags their feet. This certainly doesn't help the school's reputation. Hell, maybe the folks at U.S. News heard about the awful admissions process and decided that that should contribute to UNC's 8-point drop in the rankings.

I've been offered a pretty solid scholarship by another school, but I would turn it down immediately if I received the good news from UNC. I have until April 1 to make a decision about the scholly, so I doubt that I'll even hear a peep from UNC by then. Really a shitty situation.

Still at complete (1/11). I really hope it doesn't mean a waitlist is coming.

I've been "application complete;under review" since 2/15... still no news. Honestly, a canned e-mail telling me that they are in fact reviewing applications would've held me over and diminished much of my frustration.

Agree. Haven't been thrown a scrap. Application complete since 1/6. I'm a teacher, so in addition to seat deposits due at schools offering money, I will need to either renew my contract for the coming school year or resign the first week of April. This waiting game is making it increasingly difficult to be professional with regard to these decisions.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
Just kidding ... it's still FREE!
