What is the process to make it on the mock trial team or moot court?

I can echo what snakemongler says about ties. I have not found them to be super important in this part of Florida. The truth is that most people here are from somewhere else. Being unique can help.

I've had good success in interviews and great success in trial ad partly because people here find my accent intriguing.

When I interviewed with the firm I currently work for, the two partners who interviewed me were both from other places. One from NYC and the other from Pittsburgh. I think maybe one or two attorneys at my twenty attorney firm are from Florida originally.

Like snakemongler said, this might be a bit different if you move out into some of the rural areas.

Did you do OCI at the school if so what was it like?

I'm not sure about moot court. I think there are a couple of ways.

Trial team tryouts consist of two rounds and an interview if I remember correctly. The first round is a closing argument. If you make it to the second round, there's an interview first. Then the second round is a cross examination and a closing for the opposite side. The selection criteria are extremely subjective based on whatever the coaches think the team needs that particular year.

I did not. I was eligible, but I didn't bid on anything. There were a few good sized firms and and State Attorney's office or two (the latter were looking for 3L's obviously).

I don't know of many people who got something through OCI. If you come here, know that you are likely going to have to find employment outside of OCI.

So is it a script you are doing a monologue from or can you create your own?

Oh no. No script at all. You have a fact pattern and you have to make up your own closing. One of the things they like a lot (it seems) is if you can come up with a catchy theme. You decide 100% what to say.

Snakemongler - you said you didn't get a scholly coming in, implying you received one second/third year. is that the case?

Yes, that is the case -- although it hasn't / won't make much difference for me because of the PSLF route I am taking.

Stetson has many "Named Scholarships" (mostly for Alumni donors) that one can apply for throughout law school. The amounts vary. I've gotten one for $2,500 per semester (if you're a max-aid borrower, this only reduces what you need to take out -- it is NOT an additional amount on top of loans) since the start of my 2L year (total of $10,000 @ graduation). I also got another one-time $3,500 scholarship. For me, $13,500 out of $200K+ (total debt grad & undergrad) isn't a big dent -- especially because of PSLF.

There are bigger ones too; you just have to be industrious about applying for them, and good LoRs don't hurt. Below is a link to some of the possibilities:

I don't think anyone has made a facebook group yet. If you want to start one that would be great. Not going to be there next week, but I will be attending. Feel free to pm me if you want

I live in Florida, between Ocala and Gainesville. I have not been accepted at this point. Kettles talked to me about Part time via email two weeks ago. I hope a personal visit will make the difference in being accepted Full Time. I have been accepted to Syracuse, but would rather stay in Florida near family and the beaches.

I'm in the exact same situation. I was accepted to the part time program about a month ago after speaking to him thru email about my interest in the part-time program. He's a nice guy but he told me any move to the full time program wont be till summer after they go through their waitlist. So if any spots are open after that he said he'd consider moving me over to full time. But if you can't move over in the summer he said you can do it after your first year, which includes classes next summer.

And do you live in like Micanopy if you live between Gainesville and Ocala?

Reddick actually.

Good afternoon XXX,

I wanted to reach out to you at this time to update you regarding the
Wait List (WL) at Stetson Law. At this time, we have yet to go to the
WL. We certainly appreciate your patience with this process - we know
it is a tough place to be and we are working diligently to make
decisions and hopefully look to secure a seat for you off of the Wait List.

We will begin reviewing your WL status beginning the week following April 15, 2012.

Etc.
