Didn't apply very late. Early December.

I drove to UIUC from Kansas last week, which is not a short drive at all, to meet with them and get a tour. I was expecting to get in off the hold, especially considering my numbers relative to others' on LSN. When I met with them, they said that C and F was an issue with me (no felonies or drug charges or anything like that). I explained myself and she told me to send a LOCI addressing that to the rest of the admissions council, which I did.

Like I said, I really can't believe it. Very disappointing. I really wanted to go there.

Wow. That is ridiculous. Illinois sure is one to take the high road.

I did a TLS search. Apparently Illinois is a stickler for the C&F.

Wow. How stupid.

Wow. How stupid.

I understand why they were reluctant to admit me given my c&f stuff, but that's why I drove 16 hours round trip to help explain.

Also, I know softs aren't much of an issue, but since getting put on hold in January, I received a 4.0, got into Phi Beta Kappa, and had a paper of mine published by Johns Hopkins. As far as LOCIs go, I felt like it was a "slam dunk."

Having said all of this, I would totally go there if accepted off the wait-list.

Anyone else make it to the open house? Thoughts?

Hey Tmon, what did you think about it? I'm going to the next one in 2 weeks!

Anyone else going? I'm getting to Chicago Wednesday, and will drive to Champaign on Thursday so I'll have time to check out the surrounding area. Anyone else going and want to hang out Thursday and grab some drinks or something?

I'm thinking of going to the next Open House (April 13), but how in the world do you get to Champaign? I don't live too close, so I'm not looking to drive 12+ hours. Flying into Champaign costs $500 from anywhere. Do most people train/bus, or is it easy to fly into O'Hare and take a shuttle of some kind down to Champaign?

Most people fly into Chicago or Indianapolis. Indy is a little closer and more convenient because it's a smaller city but I usually find fares to OHare to be cheaper. Then you can take a train or bus to Champaign. Depending on the time of the day there are some cheap Greyhound fares. And they have wifi on the bus.

I was originally put on hold back in December. At the time I withdrew my application through email and received a response. Three months later I was accepted with a scholarship....nice turn of events, I'm pretty sure I'll be attending in the fall.

I'm going to email them tomorrow about increasing my current scholarship offer (25%).

I enjoyed it for the most part, in a way that snuck up on me actually. Not to say that I was going in looking to not like the place, but for whatever reason the first few events (a few speakers and a tour of the building) lulled me into thinking I wasn't going to like the school more after the event. I guess I can give a quick rundown of things for people who can't make it or are on the fence about whether to go. It'll be a little low on details, for personal reasons, and because I have a selective memory  .

Things kicked off with welcomes from the interim admissions/fin aid head, and then the dead of students (student affairs? something like that). They were all nice, but everything seemed low on information and high on fluff. Probably to be expected from an admitted student event, but "the Illinois experience" just seemed like a waste of my time.

Next was a tour of the building. The facility is decent, but nothing special IMO. My guides were decently helpful, though the students I heard from kept emphasizing how similar it is to high school. I get that there are parallels (lockers, seeing the same people, knowing everyone, one building, etc) but I'm not sure it's a good thing to keep emphasizing that. Maybe it's just me.

So then Dean Smith ran a mock class. Going in, I thought it was kind of funny that they'd assign reading for a mock class at an admitted student event, but the class ended up being pretty interesting. Dean Smith was engaging and I ended up really enjoying the class.

Lunch was next. The staff I got to speak with were pretty helpful, and the conversations I had ended up being one of my favorite parts along with the mock class before and the session that came later with Career Planning.

A faculty panel was next. There was a good mix of newer and more experienced profs. Lots of discussion about mistakes they see new students make, differences between law school and undergrad, etc.

Career services followed the faculty. I was really impressed with the guy who spoke to us, but a lot of that is because I'm probably targeting Chicago. I don't see UIUC being a really good investment for people trying to get out of the midwest. On the other hand, I think I'm convinced that UIUC has the best shot at Chicago outside of some T14s.

Student panel was last. Nothing I heard really stuck out to me, and to be honest it seemed like they just threw the 5 or 6 students with the best job situations or grades in there. They all had great job options and seemed very happy, and why would they choose people who aren't in that situation. But still, it made me take the whole session with a huge grain of salt.

So yeah. Overall thoughts. Seems like Chicago area placement is pretty solid relative to some other regional schools. The staff seemed great, including Dean Smith and the profs. Less impressed with the building, and the surrounding area. I've lived in areas large and small and just wasn't a big fan of the city. I guess the plus side of that (which staff was keen to point out) is that everybody sticks around the school and has fewer distractions. And obviously cost of living is good. Comparing to the other admitted student event I've been to (WUSTL) I almost get the sense that STL would be more fun and interesting, but that UIUC might be better for my career/life goals in the long run. Still plenty to think through, so probably no decisions from me for another month.

If anyone has any questions feel free to ask (here or via PM) and I can try to help.

No idea what the " [ERROR: 404]" stuff is about in my post, but the first one replaces the word "j.o.b." minus the periods and I think you can just ignore the 2nd one. Weird.

...tls april fools?

I wasn't sold on the school after this weekend, still on the fence, a lot of things I didn't like, there was more pomp and circumstance than anything else

Not going to be able to come up to Illinois for an open house but just decided that I'd be attending in the fall with the WSTL wait-list. With a wait-list, doubt I'd get the scholarship offer I wanted even if admitted later.

It's $500, too...which seems kinda high.

Oh I see, I thought you meant 420 was the deposit amount which seemed like an odd amount.

$400-$500 seems pretty standard for the schools I've been accepted at, but yeah a little higher than I'd like.

I think you meant that it is due on April 20, but the amount is $500. Just trying to clear up any confusion.

edit: Scooped. Also, obligatory 420 Bob clip (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bc1A6i1os8c).

Sorry, I just saw that you originally put "what" not "when"
