I have a few other negotiations out right now that will hopefully come through in the next week or so. Then it is decision time!
If they bump me up from 5K to 25%, I would be extremely happy.

Oh, I am. It makes attending more of a possibility, but COA is still pretty huge. I've been looking through their COA estimates, though, and they seem to be way high-balling it. $12k a year for room and board in Champaign? I don't know the city very well, but that seems pretty outrageously high.givemea170 wrote:btw384 wrote:Just got my negotiation email back. Just out of curiosity what do people with familiarity in the area think COL would be if UIUC isn't very accurate.

What else does COA actually include? Dumb question maybe, but if it includes every single thing you may spend your money on, 12K sounds about right.blurbz wrote:It is.btw384 wrote:Oh, I am. Re: UIUC 2015
schools tend to overestimate, because what they post is the max that you can borrow. So they try to cater to the highest denominator, and many people will fall below that. I was looking at SLU, and they post a pretty high COL, as well as like 6k for miscellanious. They even have a transportation estimate! When looking at SLU coa, it comes out to like nearly 8k a year higher than it needs to be, but UIUC seems a little more spartan than that. So just because you CAN borrow up to that amount, doesn't mean you should.
they also let you borrow $2,700 for "other expenses"
just for comparison.

So UIUC seems a little bit more in-line with reality.

twice sent a negotiation letter, twice denied. Still, I'm going to UIUC, regardless. The acceptance alone was unexpected, but the money was big for me.

Did you do anything extra or did they contact you for the scholarship increase? I am at 25% on the fence about attending, and would definitely attend if I got bumped up.wolverine10 wrote:Just got a new scholarship offer. Up from 25% to 50%. Makes my decision tougher now.

I was denied my request to receive increased aid. Guess I'll be deferring a year or taking another top rated school I've been accepted to on their offer. Sucks as I really liked U.I.U.C! But given the current market conditions it's a huge risk to assume 166k in debt (not including compounding interest) to be a lawyer when many are struggling to find employment. Definitely sucks and kind of bummed!!!!

could you imagine watching that debt continue to grow while you struggle to find a legal job. that would such a shitty situation to be in. no reason to put yourself through that
also, another year to figure shit out/ improve yourself wouldn't be that bad

Re: UIUC 2015
Yea it kind of sucks. I under performed my lsat. Reading comp was my strongest section but for some reason I glazed over it on test day (probably test day anxiety) I also have a solid job. If I waited a year I could probably have 30-40K in savings to use...by then I probably wouldn't want to use that lol!!!! Who knows though this is a tough decision as I've been offered 75% at MSU and would graduate with little debt....sigh....in2win wrote:would have to say your still making the right decision.tooswolle wrote:I was denied my request to receive increased aid. How long has it been taking for everyone to receive their scholarship negotiation responses? I sent an e-mail on Saturday (stupid, I know) and still haven't heard back.

Re: UIUC 2015
For those of you who have had successful scholarship increase requests, what are your stats if you don't mind me asking as well as what you increased from and to?
I would think they would give scholarship increases to kind of hope to build their profile one way or another.

3.5 165 increase from 25% to 50%. I explained to them I had a full ride in my home market and even though it it ranked well below Illinois it is appealing to graduate where your from with no debt. For those of you who have had successful scholarship increase requests, what are your stats if you don't mind me asking as well as what you increased from and to?
Thanks LST for the reply by the way
